| DESIGN NAME: Scala PRIMARY FUNCTION: Stair INSPIRATION: This design was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie Style Houses as well as many other buildings which utilize the effect of a tighter, lower space for a foyer to enhance the height of the following space that one enters into from the foyer. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Modifying the lower tread design so that it becomes a tunnel for the upper run offers the user two ways to experience the same design, first stepping on it then stepping through it. In creating the enveloping space on the upper run, we have the added function of providing a transition through a smaller space to enhance the scale of the room on the upper level. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Treads are open loops for the lower run which stretch upward and become a tunnel to walk through from the landing to the upper floor. The purpose for this transition is to allow the upper floor to appear larger as one passes through the condensed stair space and enters the subsequent room. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: raw steel, FSC certified wood with non VOC midnight mahagony stain SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: bentwood wood treads on a double steel stringer, 48" wide, 7" rise, 15 risers TAGS: stair, interior, gateway, wood, steel, transitional space, vertical connection, open stair, steel stringer, wooden treads, tunnel RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Precedents using the concept of transitioning through a smaller space to emphasize a grander feel for the consequent space were applied to this project. CHALLENGE: In order to expand into an upper level space, an open stair design had to be developed that would de-emphasize the lower ceiling height on the upper level.
