DESIGN NAME: Threaded Ed.18, The Curiosity Issue
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Magazine
INSPIRATION: Threaded’s editorial ethos combines occurrences between the thematic and the conceptual ideation. Ed.18’s cover was originally painted to explain to Fiona’s 4-year-old daughter the concept of time through ‘age’. We used primary tools to break down conventional graphic design mediums (ie; paints, inks and cut-outs) to explore early learning. These days, more than ever, a sense of curiosity is the ultimate self-starter kit, for not only every designer but every sentient human being.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Threaded offers insights into a range of practitioners work using an interview construct to reflect on design processes within practice. Threaded is inclusive of design work and art work from emerging and established creatives. The overarching layout design undertaken by Threaded embeds the artistic methodologies, sensibilities and attitudes of collaborators. Threaded uses a thematic to unite and synthesize content. The visual language developed to convey this theme was inspired from the cover art.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Threaded celebrates the printed object and is an exhibition space in a ‘printed space’ that encourages collaboration. Side-by-side, page-to-page – practitioners are invited to exhibit, profile projects, display their endeavors, and reflect on the nature of what they do through interview and design. Threaded curates insights into practice through discussion and presentation of practice, thinking and process.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2015 and was printed in New Zealand for international distribution in July 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Ed.18 uses a variety of B&F Papers and Arjowiggins stocks [see below] to showcase the importance of colour, format and tactility in a well crafted printed object.
Special embellishments adorn this issue’s cover section. Both the masthead and the word ‘CURIOSITY’ are blind embossed to subtly reinforce theme. Black and white ink add contrast in colour to the rich red stock.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Collaborators are encouraged to exploit critical conventions of interview constructs whilst simultaneously being humorous, highly self-conscious, disruptive or commandeering. Practitioners profiled lead and present themselves, as they want to be seen. Often the designer/artist is positioned as both interviewer and interviewee. A new type of unstructured interviewing occurs and a self-authored case study individualizes a self-critical and reflective approach in context of an editorial stance.
CHALLENGE: Threaded imbues a high level of craft focus and production outcomes for the curated experience of individualized sections including a broad range of profiles featured.
Developing a cohesive design system is critical and we rely on the thematic to act as a content and visual framework to unify sections and collaborators contributions.
Combining production outcomes, synthesizing content across a range of collaborators and ensuring visual language throughout reinforces theme is a constant challenge.
