DESIGN NAME:
Contemporary Minimalism Villa

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Residential House

INSPIRATION:
The home owners are passionate in art and is a painting collector, the new house is an art gallery other than home. Observing the art galleries, interior design is generally simple. This inspires the designer to implement minimal style in this project, making it simple, and put a lot of effort in lighting design.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Located at the Peak, the duplex apartment feels far removed from the hectic urban space. An organic design, encourages a sense of connection to nature, bringing outdoors in by making the most of the natural light and maximizing the view become the fundamental part of the design. Spacious living room and kitchen connects the indoor and outdoor world. Besides capturing the greenery and turning the scene into a room height master piece of the nature when it is closed, the glass accordion door has also added continuity and fluidity to the space when it is fully opened. The principle of sustainability, contemporary and minimalism design is applied. To match the needs of the owner’s family, designer pays special attention to spatial planning. The upper floor is designated for sleeping and the lower one for living and dining. Simple and elegant furnishing provides a perfect match to the simple structure with clean black horizontal and straight lines. The interior walls are mostly white. Based on the minimal design theme, designer has made use of black, white and grey as basic colour tones, and introduced a great variety of lighting effects. All of these techniques contributed to the cozy and comfort ambience, at the same time, reflecting the owner’s fine taste. Instead of erected walls, designer focuses on flexibility. To achieve this end, functional partition is used for increasing the diversity of the space. On the ground floor, sliding doors serve the function of separating living room and multi-function room when necessary. Similar technique is applied on the upper floor. As for the study, the use of glass sliding doors facilitate the interaction of space. Lighting is another focus, designer enhances the space by providing ambience lighting as well as different functional lighting for the art pieces and the environment.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The kitchen is partitioned with glass display cabinet and doors. It is not an open kitchen, yet it looks very spacious and is connective with dining room. In the study room on upper floor, glass partition and door are installed to provide spacious environment with privacy. To maintain sustainability, little kids rooms are not childish at all and the design can fulfill the basic requirement for teenagers. And railing clips are installed which allow easy replacement of new exhibits.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in February 2014 and ended in June 2015 in Hong Kong.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
We projected the design concept on 3D rendering by 3D Max, and all construction drawings by AutoCad. In the project, the home automation system plays an important role. The system is comprehensively controlling all electronic devices, such as lighting, TV, curtain, screen, AV, etc. The home automation fulfills the home owner's request of convenience.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The two-storeyed house is of 2800 square feet net area. There are living room, dining room, one semi-open kitchen, one store room, one guest room and one washroom on ground floor. On the upper floor, there are one study room, three kids' rooms and one master bedroom (a combination of study room and bedroom) and every bedroom has individual washroom.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
To come up with this design project of contemporary relaxing villa, the designer carried out a research of many world-class resort and contemporary villa for reference, and also recaptures the memory of visiting a gallery, and analyzes what makes it feasible to move a gallery into a house. Simultaneously, the designer visited galleries and resorts to observe and experience what should be put or what should not be put in the project.

CHALLENGE:
The glass display cabinet partitioning kitchen and dining room is a very rare design. It can be opened in both sides, the husband can take some cutlery from the cabinet next to the dining table, the wife can at the same time take some tableware from the cabinet in the kitchen. The technique is complicated. Hiding the sliding doors in living room and master bedroom is also difficult. The structure of wall is specially designed; the components of the sliding door must be of very high quality.
