DESIGN NAME: PEACOCK VASE
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Flower Vase
INSPIRATION: Peacock is inspired by the shape fo a radially spread peacock display to form a beautiful screen with unique patterns and a central focal point. Consisting of twenty-one individual stems interconnected with each other in an organic form, the vase raises flowers higher up in the air providing more visibility and attention to the floral arrangements. The distinction in between the inner and outer layers gives more depth to the overall arrangement. By raising the rear fanfare, the floral display gains more distinction from the lower crest allowing for more dynamic arrangements.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Peacock flower vase is a 3d printed test tube flower vase designed to host dynamic, spatial and artistic floral arrangements. The vase is designed to have a minimal structural setting which provides unlimited opportunities for floral designers to create their artwork and displays. Peacock has twenty-one individual stems which each contain a singular glass tube housing water and flowers that can be easily removed and without moving the vase from its original position.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The intention of the design is to create a strong platform for dynamic floral arrangements where floral artists can explore diverse options of creative designs. The vase along with diverse floral arrangement schemes can aesthetically and functionally enhance the environmental quality of interior spaces. Peacock is created using a combination of advanced technology and conventional hand crafting methodology. The digital design tools and 3d printing technology allows to create complicated shapes and produce them with accurate dimensions but eventually needs to be crafted and polished by hand to achieve a certain quality. Peacock is a platform where technology, creativity and art meet together.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2015 March and was exhibited at the Hospitality Design Expo in May 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Peacock is created using a combination of 3D printing and poly-resin casting. The exterior shell is 3D printed in several pieces using PLA thermoplastic and later assembled together to create a continuous surface. Poly resin is cast inside the 3D printed shell to add more stability and weight to the vase. The curvy form of the vase helps the structure to gain more strength through organic form by distributing the load evenly to a base surface. After the resin is cured, the vases are sent to a paint finish facility to give a highly glossy and protective finish to the final product. The polyurethane paint protects the vase from thermal deformation or wearing and is substantially durable. The 3D printing technology and processes allow the vases to be manufactured and customized easily in house with minimum finish processing.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Material: PLA thermoplastic shell with Poly Resin infill, Polyurethane paint finish.
Dimensions: 404.2mm (w) x 263.3mm (d) x 497.8mm (h)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Flower vases are essential accessories for interior spaces which characterize the space and fill it with life and refreshment. However there are certain restrictions for the vases in terms of size and complexity because the vase normally has to contain a larger body of water. Our strategy is to utilize test tubes to allow the vase to become taller and thinner while the flower displays can be raised to a higher position to gain more visibility. The structure acts as a truss system which distributes the load evenly throughout the form which is more economically efficient and aesthetically beautiful.
CHALLENGE: The manufacturing process is innovative in a way it combines 3d printing with poly resin casting. The weakness of 3d printing comes from the finish quality and sturdiness which can be strengthened by conventional technology. The 3d printing makes it possible to create complicated forms while the cast inside poly resin gives more sturdiness, strength and weight to the product. The polyurethane finish paint gives glossiness and protection to the surface which eventually makes the project look elegant and high-end. The recent price drop in 3d printers makes it possible to do custom 3d manufacturing within a competitive cost.
