DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Emotional Object #022: Gift wrap

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Coffee table

INSPIRATION:
A box of chocolates. Inspiration for objects sometimes comes from the most diverse objects. Gift wrap is a ribbon of steel wrapping around a volume just like a box of chocolates. The structure wraps around a volume made of glass or wood, just like a gift. The table has two movements: the first was direct inspiration of that chocolate box, the second one was found exploring solutions. Like many great designs, gift wrap make it look simple something very complex and difficult to make.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
When it came up the idea of this object, we were afraid that its already been made. We've searched... And found... Nothing! We couldn't believe it. But when we started to build it, we found out why... It's elegant looks was difficult to build. To make that infinite strip of metal around a volume demanded all of our expertise both from designers who wanted to make it seem easy and craftsmen who wanted to make it solid. Its just a simple coffee table; that has many good stories behind it.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This is a very simple object. You just unpacked it and put your feet on it, that is, if you dare... It's a coffee table to use. Not to contemplate.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This object was born in March 2015, Porto, Portugal. After five prototypes, the four variations of the final model were concluded in January 2016 and presented at Maison et Objet in Paris in 23 January this year.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
After several simulations, the first approach was to cut several pieces of steel and assemble them, welding until a continuous strip. But it took something like 30 hours of welding and another 20 of deburring to give it the desired effect. In design there is always a plan B. Bending a strip of metal was our best bet. Calculating the right thickness to support the weight of the table was trial and error until we were satisfied with the final result. Hard work expressed in the simples of forms.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Veneered MDF or super clear glass with brushed or polished stainless steel structure. Physical dimensions 1000 x 1000 x 300 mm. Dimensions of crate: 1100 x 1100 x 450 mm. This product is delivered full assembled in wooden crate. Weight: Wood version: 55 Kg., Glass Version: 65 Kg..

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Designing a table like gift wrap is all about proportions. The perfect angle, making that infinite loop, the thickness of the material that makes it look effortless, the weight of the piece versus the lightness of its structure. All of this, respecting the initial concept, making something look simple, hiding the real complexity involved in it's manufacturing. The apparent lightness off the steel was obtained with trial and error, experimenting with different techniques until the final result.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge is to make something difficult apparently easy. Nothing is further from the truth. This design does that. If you doubt it, just answer this question: How did we put the wood or glass inside the first movement? The final assembly is very tricky and involves welding and polishing metal with the final piece already placed. In the second movement the challenge is different but nevertheless as complicated. Fixtures are bolted inside the wooden structure and invisible to the eye.

CLIENT/STUDIO/BRAND DETAILS
NAME:
Emotional Objects

PROFILE:
“Emotional Objects” is a new brand of decorative objects, born by the hand of an architect, which had its world debut at Maison & Objet Paris, on January 2016. After nearly twenty years of work in the field, in 2012 João Faria created the "Emotional Objects" concept as a way to produce and market his own objects. This brand, composed of different pieces from butter dishes to office furniture or Bluetooth speakers, will produce only 99 objects. Then the project will be finished. With an important component of craftsmanship, the twenty-six objects developed until now take design to its limits, with no compromises and a great attention to detail. The author´s intention is to make objects that connect to people, create a relationship with their owners and provoke an emotional response.
