DESIGN NAME: Strabo
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Store
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for this project came from the experience of working with multiple range of high street and luxury brands.
Guidelines, rules, schemes, restrictions - create a very narrow room for designers creativity. Eventually over the time it built up and I started working in my spare time on the Strabo Store.
It was like an explosive dose of my ideas. I wanted to produce something that I had total control over. I received such satisfaction when completing this project. It has both - a strong, unforgetable appearence & different bussiness phylosopy.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: High Street brands constantly compete with each other to surprise and capture customers attention. This has lead to a business focused experience.
Strabo store is to introduce a slight contrast to this modern philosophy of shopping. It is still very much focused on sales and profit, however with it's "less is more" approach, the emerging brand is interested to leave the customers with a memorable experience. An experience that allows to "breathe" when browsing and discovering this store, instead of being bombarded with racks of clothes and sales labels.
Most importantly instead of "buy and leave" situation, customers are encouraged to stay in the lounge area, where enjoying their non-alcoholic beverages they are still exposed to brands products, allowing for an even longer brand interaction.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Strabo Store functions and operates as a normal high street store.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design project started in October 2013 and finished May 2015
Location - UK, Oxford

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research is based on regular interaction with multiple brands and their philosophy. Working with today's high street brands has shown that the competition between them is stronger then ever. This drives the sales and the balance of stores appearance versus product display per sqm is drastically changing. More product you can display - the better. This is not necessarily true. A level of premium and exclusiveness should be incorporated in every brands philosophy. This is something Strabo store is trying to exercise.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part of this project was planning. The Strabo Store which originally was an old "Barclays" Bank in 1970's had a very narrow corridor, which originally was a corridor that lead to managers and staff offices from the banks main floor. The corridor is rather inadequate and difficult to use as functional selling area. It was this narrow corridor layout that inspired to create exhibition like walkway with jewellery niches that introduces a separation between the store and lounge areas.
