PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To reinforce the folkloric tenor of the script, Gabriel Nóbrega chose to produce the spot entirely in stop-motion animation, using hinged cardboard puppets and miniature sets. Most of the artwork was printed and glued onto pieces of laser-cut MDF, while some settings were hand-painted or created with mixed materials, like actual tree bark for the foreground trees in the forest. Practical animation effects were used as much as possible throughout the film to ensure its ingenuously handmade character – for example, fire and smoke were created by filming pieces of cloth inside a water tank over green screen. Digital software was used only to animate a couple of individual elements and on final compositing.
Both agency and production company wanted the video to have a very cinematic feel, so the Lobo team decided to shoot it at 24 fps, with many complex camera moves in order to create an immersive experience for the viewer. All that called for more production time and a team of highly skilled, experienced animators. At the end the animation process alone took 7 months, with a team of 60+ people, using 13 scenarios and 310 characters, of which 83 were articulated and animated frame by frame. 31,200 pictures were taken during the process.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Delivered in high definition digital video file, the short has 3 minutes and 21 seconds.
