| DESIGN NAME: Life Begins With Light PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lamp INSPIRATION: Some people may fear the dark. They have to turn on the lamp when sleeping. Then, Some questions keep looping in my mind: What is the values of light? Is it only about illumination? Is there any symbolic meaning behind? UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Light illuminates the environment. It is the sun in the dark. It can turn dead to alive, hopeless to hopeful, and cold to warm. Imagine you are in dark, you can do nothing and you are nothing. When you switch on the lamp, the light glow and you will feel that life grow as well. So you will not be scared by the dark anymore. The LIFE lamp is inspired by the values of light. When the user switch on the lamp, the sperm will swim towards the egg, the light will glow when sperm and egg meet. It symbolizes "life begins with light". As a product designer, I think it is a pity that people only focus on the function and appearance of lamp nowadays. Light is a beautiful thing, it can make things possible. I want to show my respect to the values of light. Please don't just focus on the lamp only. We should focus more on the emotions that light bring us. The LIFE lamp want to provoke your emotional response about light. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When the user switches on the lamp, the sperm will swim towards the egg, and the light bulb glow at the same time. The user can observe the process. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2015 and finished in April 2015 in Hong Kong, and was exhibited as ''Best of Show'' in Annual Show of School of Design in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in June 2015. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The shell is made by transparent acrylic tube. I want the audience can observe what is happening inside the lamp. So a transparent color is chosen(color may distract audience). And a big positive space is designed to emphasize the negative space where the sperm will meet the egg. So a thick tube is chosen. To allow the user to change the light bulb. The acrylic tube can be disassemble into two parts. Four permanent magnets on top is used to stick two acrylic parts together. The base is made by aluminium. It is strong enough to hold the two acrylic parts together. When it switches on, the electromagnet under the sperm will provide a temporary repel force to make the sperm jump upwards. When it switches off, an attract force is existed between the sperm and electromagnet. So it fall back to its original position. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Diameter 200mm x Height 600mm TAGS: Electromagnet, magnet, life, sperm, egg, lamp, lighting, symbolic product, product design, light object, forms, changing, lamp, minimalist, connection, light tube RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I have first interviewed people about the feeling of light and lighting. The answer can be classified into two group: functional and emotional. Then I also study the frequency and situation of using light. Some people need light all time even sleeping. Therefore, I want to find out the values of light. Then I study the symbolic meaning of sun(Sun is origin of light), history of Lighting, the technologies of lighting, emotional design, emotional lighting. And later on, I finalized the concept and think about the mechanism. So I also researched about magnetism and electricity circuit. And do a lot of experiment about ''jumping sperm'' and "how to complete the circuit with jumping motion''. CHALLENGE: The mechanism part is most difficult for me. I only learn a little bit theory about electricity in high school. I first use the physics theory to design the lamp. When I started the experiment, I found that I even don't know how to connect the cable. All the theory is too ideal. It is not practical when you do something with theory.
