| DESIGN NAME: One Sheet PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bookshelf INSPIRATION: Inspired by the material property of steel itself, harvesting the delight of its related industrial processes, to create a clean and bold design. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Simple but conscious design to celebrate the quality of metal as a contemporary material and creates a bold frame to highlight the contents held on the bookshelf. The product also outstand itself by its clean, well detailed and manufacturing-minded design: the shelf is produced out of a single piece of rectangular metal via the processes of cutting and bending. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Bookshelves have long been considered as functional utilities to hold books and small items. This project posed a rethink to redefine bookshelf as an artifact for aesthetic display of books, thus it formally expressed as a clean, modern and bold frame exploiting the material of steel. LED light are added along the design process, as we received feedback that quality lighting would be essential for object display. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: 2 months Design Development Period. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Metal LASER cutting Bending PVF2 Coating SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Type 430 Steel PVF2 Coating TAGS: Shelf, book, interior, design, clean, bold, architecture, bookshelf, winning, creative RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Innovative design methodology were employed: TRIZ and “design thinking” The design was distilled for many rounds to achieve its pure form. Manufacture feasibility and available industrial process are integrated consideration for an optimum product. CHALLENGE: One of the greatest design challenges was to select the material for this bookshelf. Various plastic, metallic and composite materials had been researched in and considered. Steel was selected due to its inherited aesthetic heaviness, strength, stiffness and industrial processes compatibility.
