| DESIGN NAME: iFi Retro Audio System PRIMARY FUNCTION: All-in-one home audio system INSPIRATION: The way we live is changing, from large to small homes. The way music is enjoyed is also changing from wired to wireless. On both counts, the Retro delivers. It is an all-in-one, shoe-boxed sized system that plays music via blue tooth through to vinyl records. Its exterior is derived from the look of classic amplifiers - Marantz (from Japan) and Leak (from England). We then applied a modern touch using bamboo complimented by rose gold anodizing. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Retro is an audiophile standard, all-in-one stereo system for the modern consumer. The exterior exudes a stylish, yet classic stereo look. The interior boasts all-new audio, power and connectivity features that make it truly original consumer design. It features some of the most advanced technology: it supports high-resolution audio to PCM768kHz/DSD512, it has unparalleled versatility/connecti OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Any music source from wireless streaming via Bluetooth/aptX to vinyl via a turntable can play audio through the Retro Stereo System. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in 2013 when we came across an old classic amplifier and we asked ourselves "what if we could have a modern all-in-one that stays true to its name..." October 2013 we exhibited at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest (America's premier audio show). Thereafter, the prototype travelled throughout the world to gather feedback before it was finally launched in January 2015. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Emotive Design: we chose a timeless design to the Golden Age of the HiFi stereo to evoke nostalgia, as music should stir the heart. Caring for the environment: our innovative ultra-efficient power supply design achieved a power supply efficiency of 85% which is atypical for a valve amplifier power. Materials used are: Bamboo, Steel, Glass (Valves), Aluminium, Copper/Silver for cabling Paper/Silk/Magnets (for speaker drivers). SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Stereo 50 Wireless Input Bluetooth aptX Digital Input USB DSD512 and 768kHz and 2xDXD Coaxial Optical Analogue Input Phono MM and MC Low MC High RETRO LS3.5 Speaker Sensitivity 90dB 2.83V at 1m Freq response 60Hz to 20KHz Solid Bamboo Enclosure Acoustic Active Tuning with minimal damping Retro Stereo 50 Amplifier Width 300 mm x Height 153 mm x Depth 226mm 5.8kg Retro LS3.5 Speaker Width 146 mm x Height 268 mm x Depth 226mm 3.5kg per speaker TAGS: High Resolution Audio formats. Able to handle up to PCM768 and DSD512, Phono stage, USB audio input, bluetooth aptx, dac converter RESEARCH ABSTRACT: 1. Aesthetics. For modern appeal, we drew upon classic amplifiers from Marantz to Leak, polished with a modern bamboo finish, rose gold anodizing and a Golden Ratio layout. 2. Power supply. This had to be environmentally friendly and to audiophile liking. The final hybrid topology is a best of both worlds design of switch-mode and linear power designs. CHALLENGE: Combing a valve amplifier, high resolution PCM and DSD formats digital to analogue converter, phono stage with Bluetooth aptX receiver all into one shoebox sized chassis was undoubtedly a challenge.
