The mother nature of Yilan County, Taiwan.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Rocking Dolphin is inspired by wild dolphins playing around Guishan Island, a part of Toucheng Township, Yilan County, which is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Yilan. Rocking Dolphin is assembled with CNC milled pine plank parts with steel rod joints to maintain beautiful natural wood appearance as well as for its easy assembly. It can be flat-packed for easy transportation to avoid any difficulty of shipping.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Rocking Dolphin is an ultimate fun furniture piece for kids with age range of 1 to 3 year old. It promotes young mind to feel and touch an adorable ocean creature "dolphin". Made with 100% natural wood plunk provides soft sanded edge for kids to enjoy touching smooth wood surface and feel the nature. Main seating area of Rocking Dolphin is the front are of top fin and the side fins are where kids can rest their feet.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in May 2014 and finalized two prototypes for Yilan Kid chair design competition, which is annual competition held by the cultural ministry of Yilan local government. It acquired quality award among over 600 entries at the contest. Rocking dolphin has been exhibited at the Taiwan Designers week 2014, Taipei city, as well as Vision of Children Chair Exhibition 2015 in Yilan city.

Rocking Dolphin is a part of our design research applying 3D modeling and translating through digital fabrication tools such as CNC milling and laser cutting machines. The precise digital modeling promotes new design typologies, which relatively difficult to achieve with traditional handcrafting. Our research also challenges how the digital fabricated design could reach to general consumer with economical prices. Since the digital tools are becoming more and more available with decent price.
The creative challenge of Rocking Dolphin could be divided into two phases of development. The first stage is the 3D modeling phase. In order to simplify and abstract dolphin figure, we studied dolphin poses, which possibly be able to apply as rocking chair. Second phase of challenge is the actual fabrication and assembly. The material for the design was chosen to be 12mm pine plunk for CNC fabrication as well as physical strength to carry weight.
