RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Rocking Dolphin is a part of our design research applying 3D modeling and translating through digital fabrication tools such as CNC milling and laser cutting machines. The precise digital modeling promotes new design typologies, which relatively difficult to achieve with traditional handcrafting. Our research also challenges how the digital fabricated design could reach to general consumer with economical prices. Since the digital tools are becoming more and more available with decent price.
CHALLENGE: The creative challenge of Rocking Dolphin could be divided into two phases of development. The first stage is the 3D modeling phase. In order to simplify and abstract dolphin figure, we studied dolphin poses, which possibly be able to apply as rocking chair. Second phase of challenge is the actual fabrication and assembly. The material for the design was chosen to be 12mm pine plunk for CNC fabrication as well as physical strength to carry weight.
