DESIGN NAME: Lipton Pandora
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Packaging
INSPIRATION: The design for Pandora's body stems from the shape of the tea leaf. Each individual grip is molded to follow the tip of a leaf while the inset of the panel is then formed by the central vain of the leaf. This subtle shape allows for elegant twisting surfaces that wrap around the body of the grip. The hour glass shape provides a soft feminine character to the container as it slims through the waist lifting your eye to the label. The bright and colorful character of the label pops against the tea product.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design of Pandora maximizes the use of its own light weighting in the structure itself (the 500ml version coming in at 22grams, making it one of the lightest weight commercialized hot fill containers in the world). It is an exceptionally rigid plastic container despite its light weight. The patented VAB base helps to keep the rigidity and absorb the vacuum created from hot fill products. The curved panels form to the hand comfortable providing firm tactile feedback for the consumer.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In order to absorb the necessary vacuum attributed to the hot-fill process of packaging, Pandora was crafted with a specialized base and body panels. This base functions as a diaphragm that flexes as it product cools. The body panels not only provide the container rigidity despite the limited amount of material, they also function as an ergonomic grip for the consumer that is both visually stimulating and to the touch.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project launched to the commercial marketplace in El Salvador in 2014

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This package, designed for the Lipton Tea brand in Latin America, weighs 22 grams, and this new bottle is unique in how it affects the fillers and the environment. It utilizes a mono-material closure made of PP and no longer needs a liner making it easier on the recycling stream. With 30 percent less PET, Pandora’s is a cost-effective, eco-friendly lightweight package.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Extensive research was done to improve the functionality of the packaging from Ergonomic studies, FEA Analysis, to pallet optimization. A thorough user interaction study was conducted to streamline the containers gripability, panel styling was needed to create a iconic package.
CHALLENGE: As part of its sustainability and productivity goals Amcor started to design and develop the lightest weight hot fill containers to date. The goal was to develop extreme lightweight containers that would minimize the cost differentiation between aseptic fill and hot fill. In order to achieve the lightweighting targets proprietary technologies were employed in the development of a truly world class product.
