PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Loose Leaf Portable Vaporizer

INSPIRATION:
PAX 1 is the market leading premium portable vaporizer; our challenge was to improve it. As we are constantly looking to develop upon various features, our inspiration comes from our intensely valued customer feedback. With these responses in mind, we further integrated hardware and software, making the PAX 2 smaller, faster, smarter, more robust, longer lasting on a single charge, and more straightforward use. PAX 2 demonstrates the thoughtful design and advanced technology we are known for.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
PAX 2 is the most technologically advanced vaporizer available. PAX 2 heats loose-leaf material to release vapor. Features include motion and lip-sensing technology that automatically adjusts the temperature; auto-cooling; self-optimizing temperature and power; two, interchangeable mouthpieces, with an integrated power button; simple, elegant design; user friendly interface; four temperature settings; AC and USB charging options; heats in as little as 45 seconds; and hidden features and fun modes for sharing with friends.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
First, remove the magnetic oven lid and pack with loose-leaf material, replace the oven lid. Power on by pressing the button in the center of the mouthpiece; it takes 30 sec. to 1 min. to heat up, LED petals will pulse, then turn green when ready. Change temperature: hold down mouthpiece button when the device is on. When in temperature set mode, LED petals change from green to yellow, orange, or red. Shake the device or hold mouthpiece button to exit temp. set mode. Draw on mouthpiece.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
All team members had different perspectives on what would be ideal, so a lot of great ideas came to the table. One of our highest priorities was the industrial design, so we designed from both directions – outside in and inside out. We constrained ourselves on size and the way it was supposed to look, but still found a way to fit everything we wanted into the new form.

Exterior Material: Transverse Brushed Anodized Aluminum Device Dimensions: 3.87 x 1.21 x 0.85 Oven Dimensions: 18.5mm x 8.6mm x 10mm Battery: Lithium ion battery recharges via USB Materials: Vapor path is constructed from medical grade components. All plastic components are food-safe engineering plastics of the highest quality available.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We performed a large number of drop tests, and edited materials and part geometries to prevent any breakage when the device is dropped. We developed our own battery testers to simulate real device load on batteries and make final battery selection. We also incorporated feedback received from our customers and relied heavily on any and all info garnered from product returns. The result: a cleverly evolved product with fewer possible failures, higher efficiency and a more intelligent design.

CHALLENGE:
While making an industry-leading device smaller, we had to innovate utilizing space more efficiently. The design was based on iterative trial and error and many user studies. The goal was to improve on what we’d learned with PAX 1. Another challenge was securing the internal assemblies into the device shell. We combined a more tamper-proof anchoring mechanism with the device charging contacts, solving two problems, and used a complex light pipe system that minimized the space needed to 4 LEDs.
