DESIGN NAME:
Whole Foods Market, Davie FL

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Grocery Retail

INSPIRATION:
Inspiration is Davie, FL itself - its history, unique culture, values, and food-values that matter to its future. Came together as fusion of Native American textile patterning, colonial American materials of the region (repurposed cypress barn wood, upcycled rusted hardwares, rope), nautical (from extensive fresh fish on display to block & tackles in signage and décor). Color palette elevates all of this to a bright, modern, beachy store providing everything from health, beauty and home goods, flowers, grocery, meals, and everything in between to support a whole, natural lifestyle.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
retail design, build, install Whole Foods Market, Davie FL celebrates the history, geography, and culture of this once homesteading city east of Everglades and just off Gold Coast. Palette of lush Atlantic; Textile patterns of Seminole Americans; raw materials, rustic hardware of a ranch. Modern interpretation is nautical and equestrian, brought into background, furnishings, treatments, signage, fonts, language… Thru application of distinct materials, color combos, and headlines (“BUTCHER” “HARVEST”) the shopper is taken on a journey of discovery through the grocery.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Nautical and equestrian. Combines textile patterning of Native Americans with materials and hardware of a coastal cattle ranch. Taking cues from bright sun shadowed by Spanish moss and big tree overhangs, destination spaces (eg floral, produce) evoke a feel of a perfect clearing in a nature canopy or hanging harvest garden. Botanical focus extends to geometric patterning and design (based on symbolic storytelling employed by local Seminole Americans in basket-weaving that dates pre 1700s). These patterns serve as a background element throughout the store.

CHALLENGE:
Creating a modern, bright, rustic store without becoming cliché western Fit a lot of destinations & décor in a low-ceiling space (worked w/ architect to raise lights) to increase visibility Individual looks & feels for destination areas (restaurant, bar, butcher, etc.) within over-arching environmental theme Recreating Animal Welfare rating system signage (a 5 level rating system) to be modular, easily understood, and see-thru (so that butcher staff working in back can easily see customers approach)
