DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Blackout

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Electric Guitar

INSPIRATION:
We wanted to create something quite extreme but which can still reach lots of people. Inspired by 50's american cars, this guitar had to be retro but with a great confort.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The design is a mix of retro/vintage and futuristic concept. This guitar could have been designed in the 50's or in 2020 but is totally original and looks like no other on the market. The body shape really fit to the musician body with easy access to the top frets and a great equilibrium when guitar being worn. Selection of wood materials and pickups offer long sustain notes and great playability in many different style like rock, blues or metal. Making the Blackout a really contemporary guitar.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The guitar has to be used with a guitar amp. Great materials and high end hardware bring lots of harmonics into the sounds and long sustain which is what people sought after. To reach that, we used specific bridge system (TonePros), tuners (Gotoh), headstock angle (17 degree), bone nut, electronics (CTS potentiometers and paper oil capacitor) and handwounded pickups (Hepcat). The body was designed to offer a great confort for the player.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in february 2013 and finished in september 2013. It was exhibited to public for the first time at 2014 NAMM Show in Los Angeles (January 2014).

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
All new design start by using Photoshop. This gives great freedom and helps having a drawing totally close to the final products. Once validated, the body is vectorised with Illustrator and correct dimensions are applied (neck scale, bridge position etc...) A first prototype is manufactured with a CNC machine for neck and body. Finish and mounting are made by hand to fine tune the guitar. Corrections are applied if protytpe is not totally accurate and then production might start.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
1110mm height x 345mm width x 43mm depth 3.8kg weight Delivered in a guitar case with a certificat

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We've been designing guitars since 2008, we have a really good knowledge of all guitar history and designs. Today best selling guitars were designed in the 50's. Most of the new designs that are coming today are too contemporary and rely on fashion. They last for 5 to 10 years and are quickly outfashioned. To achieve an ageless design, we don't focus on today fashions but try to create a classical feeling. Classical and timeless design reissure the customer and help him to adopt it easily.

CHALLENGE:
Guitarists are really conservative. It's really hard to bring something trully original. When the devleoppement of the blackout started, the idea was to developp something really original but that could sell well. Something that would not be just a concept. The hardest thing was finding the good balance between a really original guitar and a guitar that would be played on stage by everyone. A guitar is a tool to help an artist express himself on stage.
