| DESIGN NAME: Luxury Buttoned Sneaker PRIMARY FUNCTION: Luxury Buttoned Sneaker INSPIRATION: The inspiration for this design came from the need to create a sneaker with a duality, which could be used both for going out and for work. To fulfill this need the brand is based in the concept we named "Classic Rebels", a combination of rebellious style riders from the 50's with elegance and poise of men 60s. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Byron & Leach shoe takes the traditional sneaker design to a new level, incorporating buttons instead of laces for a more dressy and stylish look. It also features a piece of Mexican silver jewelry flower shaped in the backstay, flower inspired by the bikers patches and gentlemen boutonnieres. The sole has an ascending form to simulate the height of the dress shoes' heel, it is a combination of leather and synthetic materials that gives it a special appearance. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The final design was created for men, but in the process we also think of those women who likes to wear sneakers, so the shoes has potential to be also worn by women. The buttons, in addition of differentiate the product form its competition, allow the sneaker to change and have different looks, when buttons are undone the shoes take a casual style, a style to be worn with jeans and t-shirts; when the shoe is buttoned up it becomes more dressy to be used with shirts and work pants. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2014 and finished in November 2014 in Monterrey, Mexico. It was exhibited in Universidad de Monterrey in December 2014. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The sneakers were handcrafted by Mexican artisan in a small workshop in Monterrey, Mexico. The outside of the sneaker is made from a black cowhide leather with a subtle grain, and in the inside the shoe is covered with plain black pigskin. The sole is made from leather in the top and bottom sections, and from EVA foam in the middle, which provides cushioning and shock absorption. The piece of jewelry is made from Mexican silver and handcrafted by a Mexican designer. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width: Front 100mm Back 70mm Depth: 285mm Height: 160mm TAGS: sneakers, buttons, high top, handcrafted, shoes, mexico RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Mexico has established itself as a high value exporter of shoes, having as main consumers countries like Italy, France and US. For this reason we saw an opportunity to create a brand within this category, focusing on the market for sneakers since in recent years it has seen the success that companies have engaged in selling these type of shoes, and to prove that Mexico has the potential and can design and produce unique products with quality. Method: aim, research, concept, design, test, result CHALLENGE: Shoe design is usually done by fashion designers or industrial designers, but in this case all team members are graphic designers. As graphic designers we have very little experience on product design, however we have the design basis which helped us to create the project, in addition to not be within the scope of footwear design allowed us to explore different options without limiting us by the rules of the footwear industry.
