DESIGN NAME: Vonk Fuse
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Picknicktable
INSPIRATION: On the green outskerts of many factories I found the classic picknick table left behind in an unattended wobbly state and was struck by its atmosphere of decay. It did not appear in anyway as an instrument to bring together a happy family of coworkers recharging their energy during lunchtime.
I wanted to reinstate the function of this classic piece through its design and durability.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: "The strength is in the material”
Two classic materials and a smart construction principle became the foundation of our collection. The construction - clearly explained in Birkhauser’s Timber Construction Manual - isn’t new, but I’ve never seen the use as such in furniture design.
The construction method stops the wood from working and dishing. A mysterious key is given by the hidden construction using inserts and bolts.
The warm galvanized frames can be anchored and have a high resistance to climate and human interaction. The powder coating accentuates the form.
Wood type and or steel frame finish can be personalized . It allows the client to combine and fit in the table in it’s direct environment.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: You can sit on it in all directions or on top, using the table top as a backrest is also relaxing. Dancing on top permitted!

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The table is made of hardwood and coated metal.
Frames are produced out of lasered metal sheets of 5 mm. The strips of 100 x 5mm, provided with the necessary drillings, are bended to the right angle and welded together in position.
After a quality check we pick up the rough frames and bring them either to the Galva plant or to the powder coating facilities.
The hardwood is selected on the suppliers’ plant and is brought in planed (50 x 145) to our workshop. The beams are shortened to the right length and the incision of 100 mm is made on a tenoner (vertical spindle). Drilling is done by a horizontal dual drill. The beams are sanded through a sanding street, cleaning them up on all 4 sides. Inserts are mounted before assembly or storage.
Finally a brand mark is put on the beams for the outside position.
Starting off with 1 product a day 5 years ago, the purchase of industrial machinery last year increased the production proces by factor 10 or more.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We conducted experimental research on how to get the design off paper into a prototype, protecting it, finding accurate reproduction methods with the right partners to do so.
Getting it off paper: Detailed drawings were made, so the frames could be produced in a metalprocessing plant. Examining the first pair, the cross sections needed support. Redesigning was needed, a reinforcement in the middle of the frame solved the problem but was a huge concession for the initial design.
The diameter of the holes in the frames and the correctness of the welding were adjusted in consultation with the experts on the welding field.
Finding the right inserts for the wood construction: Installing the type with hexagon socket went difficult. When searching thoroughly on the internet, fairs, and suppliers I finally got to the right company. They supplied exact data and possibilities. Correct drilling diameters, right type of insert and according mounting tools.
Editing and finding the right woodtype was no issue as a highly skilled and experienced woodworker - interior architect, coming from a carpenter family. Making the incisions in the wood, first on a panelsaw, later on a tenoner was a matter of time and money.
Drilling the holes for the inserts with a caliber and two manual rooters wasn’t sufficient for larger runs. Buying an industrial horizontal dual drill with foot controller speeded the process.
Sanding was done manually at first with a bandsander. To enable a better and quicker finish, a sanding street was brought in.
The combination of the industrial machinery and a manual finishing of the product at a final check ensures we are able to contiuously deliver a high quality product.
CHALLENGE: Combining craftsmanship and modern-day entrepreneurship. Meeting the same high standards in material choice, soberness, the finishing touches, cradle to cradle,...
