DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Shade Me If You Can

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Sunglasses

INSPIRATION:
The sunglasses are a part of my Alter Self collection that is inspired by ergonomics, human curves, anatomy and outlines. The sunglasses are a face object, inspired by the eyebrow line and the eye sockets- designed to exaggerate and express the these two chosen parts.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Handmade Sunglasses, with horizontal Walnut wood visor and two gold plated brass frames positioned in a diagonal. The two round lenses are connected to the visor by two studs each. The visor is made of a hand carved walnut wood, shaped in a minimalist - geometric lines. The wooden visor is the connection point holding all parts together. The brass crafted handles are made from two quadrilateral posts, partly covered with leather at the part that touches the head. The handles are formed in a crescent shape, which causes the wearer to wear the sunglasses like a hat, from the head down. I discovered that carving wood allows me to pronounce the body at his most natural way, in spite of the woods massive presence I managed to refine it by adding bright metal and textiles.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This face object main purpose was to be inventive, fashion forward, avant garde piece. The wooden visor sunglasses are designed to fit and enrich the wearers face; The unconventional form will immediately attract the surroundings attention which leading to interaction, and design dialogue.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in December 2012 - June 2013 Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, Ramat Gan, Israel

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Made from hand carved Walnut wood, traditional silver crafting, gold plated brass and leather. Traditional metal crafting, hand wood carving, leather sewing.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Width 140 mm X Depth 155 mm X Height 55 mm

TAGS:
handmade, sunglasses, wood, fashion accessory

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Living in sunny Israel makes you wear your sunglasses for 365 days a year (hence the visor), which means the sunglasses must be an extremely comfortable and face suitable object to wear. When I started develop "Shade Me If You Can" visor sunglasses the main challenge was to make a light weighted statement piece. I looked for dense but light kind of wood. The Walnut has a beautiful deep brown color, light weighted but still strong and dense to work with. For the metal frame I made variable experiments with the thickness of the metal until I reached the right size. The handles were frames in a crescent shape to fit, and surround the wearers head, it felt to me as all this construction needs to become one with the wearers body.

CHALLENGE:
I wanted to invent a new pair of glasses, a TRUE STATEMENT PIECE. Using different materials, different textures and combing them all together. "Shade Me If You Can" was the second pair of glasses I have ever made. I mostly straggled with the balance of this object. Having the wooden visor, and the metal frame, I wasn't quite sure how to balance it so it would sit perfectly on the nose- without burden it.
