DESIGN NAME: Primo
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table
INSPIRATION: The fascination for the tiny wonders of an universe seen through the microscope lens and the mathematical rules that explain the complex and dynamic form of organic cells.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Madalin Gheorghe from Studio SIMPLEXIO has created PRIMO, a series of custom coffee tables that combine generative design principles with flexible computer-aided manufacturing systems.
The intricate geometry is derived from a space-partitioning algorithm called VORONOI, which deals with means of matter aggregation at cellular levels in nature.
The different parameters constitute a sum of factors from which the coffee table emerges into an infinite number of different iterations and at the same time part of a unified aesthetic.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Each table is composed of several smaller modules which fit together and are held together with magnets. The modules can function together or separately.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2012 and ended in July 2014

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: CNC Laser Cutting on metal sheets which are then folded, welded and epoxy coated.
CNC water jet cutting on glass which fits perfectly in a special frame.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The custom tables can reach practically any dimension, in order to best fit the client's needs.
Yellow Version: 1600 x 900 x 500 mm
Green Version: 400 x 380 x 550 mm
Red Version: 1050 x 550 x 380 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The purpose of the research was to find a way in which a furniture piece can be designed and fabricated so that it can fit any room, dimension or body anatomy.
By designing with algorithms, the purpose of designing has shifted from drawing the shape to designing the process that gives birth to that shape.
I combined low unit costs of digital fabrication with the flexibility of individual customization to achieve a very similar production cost for two different coffee tables.
CHALLENGE: To design an algorithm that produces visually attractive products with little effort and which at the same time takes into account constraints like cost or fabrication methodology.
