DESIGN NAME: Monet Garden
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bib Necklace
INSPIRATION: Monet Garden has been inspired by the famous painting, Water Lilies, by my favourite Impressionist artist, Claude Monet. His birthday is the same as mine too.
Ever since I saw Monet’s painting of his garden, there has been a yearn in my mind to recreate such beautiful and dreamily purple and green landscape with the use of gemstones.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The entry piece, Monet Garden, has two unique properties. Its translucent rose-cut tanzanite and tourmaline allow the skin tone of the user to be part of the color palette. On the other hand, its slim and flexible structure contours the chest of the user to mimic an undulating landscape. The result is a wearable tapestry of a flowery garden.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It is best worn as an accessory for low-cut evening gown. The setting is so flexible that the bib necklace will follow the natural curvature of the user’s neck and bosom.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project originated and completed in Hong Kong. 18 months have been spent to collect different materials of jadeite, tanzanite, tourmaline, green sapphire, amethyst and tsavorite garnet.
Preparation of mould to setting of stones lasted for two months in the manufacturing process. Monet Garden was completed in mid-2014.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The stones come in different cuts and sizes. All stones are set in prongs except small diamonds surrounding the jadeite cabochons are in pave setting. These streaks of diamond with tapered flying tails accentuate the slightly sloped flowery terrain, which is the essence of the design.
Different components are arranged into 4 plates for the front part so that it is workable for the artisans and flexible for the wearer.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The faceted, rose-cut, or cabochon stones exhibit different degrees of luster, refractiveness and reflectance. The distinct dots of coloured stones are applied in a pattern similar to the Impressionistic brush strokes of pointillism.
Jadeite and the bib style are the Oriental elements in the design. Jadeite is less translucent and bigger than the other gemstones, giving the whole composition more rhythm and depth, especially when viewed from the side.
CHALLENGE: It took 18 months to collect gemstones in different tones of purple and green to fulfill the palette of Monet Garden.
Finding a light yet sturdy way to set over 700 gemstones with different depths is another challenge. By dividing the front part of the necklace into 4 plates, I minimize movable joints and thus reduce overall weight. Resulting in a bib necklace that is flexible enough to follow the user’s natural body curvature.
