PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Bodysurfing Handplane

INSPIRATION:
1000 Surfboard Graveyard Ecto Handplanes grew from to my '1000 Surfboard Graveyard' project. The art project was dedicated to collecting 1000 broken surfboards for a large scale board graveyard art installation on the Garie Beach, near Sydney, Australia. 1000SG paid tribute to all the surfers who broke surfboards that they loved, but more significantly highlighted the current wastage and disposable nature of high performance surfboards.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Unique Feature Summary: - Upcycing broken surfboard foam from landfill - Fully adjustable one size fits all strap, optional wrist leash. - Ideal volume of 2L and signed dimensions 15 1/2" x 8" x 1 1/4" - Glassed in durable polyester resin with satin finish. - Slight single concave with rail and tail curves for generating speed/hold - GoPro camera nose mount to capture all your best waves and wipe-outs - Fabric inlays for contemporary decoration and strength

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The refined shape and volume of the Ecto Handplane, 2L buoyancy, creates an effective increase in speed and control. The shape transitions between round rail edges nearer to the nose and harder rail edges underneath the tail, which generates hold and speed. The slight single concave on on the bottom efficiently channels moving water . The rounded square tail aids manoeuvrability. Foam and fibreglass construction offers superior smooth sliding characteristics

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Ecto Handplanes were in development between during 2011-12 in Kiama, Wollongong and Mona Vale. The product has been growing in popularity since they were launched online (worldwide store) and in the Australian surf retail market in 2013.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
1. Shaping Polyurethane foam routed accurately using 3d CAD software. (A special manufacturing technique was developed). 2. Glassing Shaped foam 'blanks' are glassed with polyester resin. Rice paper logos brand and fabrics are inlayed for branding and decoration and extra strength. 3. Straps Fully adjustable and one size fits all. 25mm strapping and a comfortable layer of 3mm neoprene. Correct positioning ensures the riders gains the most speed from having hand strap in the best area.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The Ecto Handplane takes inspiration from surfboard design, measured in feet and inches, 15 1/2" (393mm h) x 8" (203mm w) x 1 1/4" (32mm d). Signed with dimensions following the same tradition as surfboard design to bring a new level of accuracy within handplane design. Every Ecto Handplane comes with an optional wrist leash and swing tags that provide full product information.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Ecto Handplanes grew from to my '1000 Surfboard Graveyard' research project developed as part of Honours year at The University Of Wollongong in 2011. A key statistic from my research was that, 'currently there is between 47 to 63 million surfboards in circulation world wide*, the vast of which will go to landfill because surfboards cannot be recycled'. This research gave great impetus for the need, and potential for recycling surfboards.

CHALLENGE:
1. Shape: Getting the right volume of buoyancy right to effectively 'hydroplane9;, or skim. 2. Manufacturing Routing the 3D Ecto shape from broken surfboards of all sizes required, special technique developed. 3. Material Broken surfboards are difficult to source regularly, but driving need for comprehensive recycling program. 4. Awareness Not all beach goers have used a handplane, eduction, marketing, awards on benefits has been required.
