| DESIGN NAME: Tactica One PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bottle opener INSPIRATION: Increasingly the global demand for premium beverages is growing. Too often the drinking experience begins only when the user tastes the beverage which is due to the use of sub-standard bottle openers. We wanted to rethink this and allow users to start their experience from the moment they pick up a bottle opener. The Tactica One is a revolutionary tool that merges design and materials to create the worlds first polymer bottle opener. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Tactica One is a precision bottle opening tool that rethinks the premium drinking experience. Its unique design has created a form that is not only compact, ergonomic and highly tactile but uses inherent material properties to deliver functional performance in an ultra-lightweight package. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Tactica One is used to open bottled beverages via a lever action. Its compact, lightweight form allows it to be part of your everyday carry and can be used to open any type of bottled drink - beer, cider, water, etc. Its form also allows it to be easily stored when not in use. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project commenced in May 2014 and was completed in December 2014. All of the development was carried out in Melbourne, Australia. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Tactica One uses a proprietary material that is typically used in the aerospace and military industries. The design has been developed to enable cost effective production within Australia by using a single composite material, reducing complexity and integrating elements such as textures and custom branding options. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 128mm long, 40mm wide, 7mm thick and weighs 22g TAGS: Bottle opener, beverage, craft beer, cider, water RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Extensive research was undertaken into areas such as existing products, manufacturing and materials through to user experiences and drivers. It was found that an opportunity existed to rethink the users experience and make their journey drinking premium beverages from the time they first picked up a bottle opener. They needed a tool that match the premium beer, cider or water they were about to consume. The results confirmed this through test subjects responding positively to the Tactica One. CHALLENGE: The Tactica One is the worlds first composite bottle opener resulting in many challenges. The design utilised a suspended working surface to open the bottles which demanded stiffness and strength. The composite was able to withstand the torsional forces produced during the opening action and created a working surface strong enough to handle the physical forces from the steel bottle top. Integration of textures in the tooling provided greater connection with the user through tactile surfaces.
