DESIGN NAME: Turn to the Future
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Spiral Rotating Building
INSPIRATION: The design is inspired from the movie “Elysium,” that talked about the disparity between rich and poor. The form of the design is inspired from the wormhole.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: I call this project "Turn to The Future.” This project gives urban people the opportunity to change their lives, because it redefines the future of living spaces. The main feature of building encompassed a system that changes the way that humans interact with their environment. By moving the living the user’s spaces; it’s also change interior relationship with the ground, sky, light, gravity and shadow.
According to my research, urbanization has become a big trend in the world. Because of that, buildings will become higher and higher, and more and more people who live in the lower floors of buildings will get their view blocked. Based on the results from both the Asian and the American market research, there is a different in sales or rental prices between the lower floor units and higher floor units in the same building. In the future, all the top floors of buildings will be owned by people with very high incomes and the middle to lower income people will only have a limited view from their living spaces. The high income people find it hard to buy the top floor of living spaces in buildings because there are a limited amount of these units in the most major cities.
I think every person should have a chance to share an equal view of their city and landscape from their living spaces. I designed a rotation system by using existing technology that allows each unit to move on a spiral track in predetermined time. Because of the design, each resident who lives in the building can share an equal view from their building and enjoy the high quality of their living spaces.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The new design allows each unit in the building to move at predetermined times, decided upon by residents. Because of that, the residents will have different angles and views of their city. The center of the building has four elevators and two staircases that allow residents exit and entrance. Doors leading to moving system will close automatically when the units are moving to change their position. When an emergency occurs, the system will automatically shut down and residents can exit from the stairs.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in September 2013 and it was completed and presented in December 2014 at Academy of Art University.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Entire moving system includes the spiral track, roller coaster system, utility reconnection system, hydraulic braking system, support braking system, infrared sensor system, regenerative braking systems, dynamic generator, cranes systems, hydraulic skidding systems, and a central computer control program.
Every units slide down on the spiral tracks by gravity that uses a roller coaster system to hold the units on to the track and stops it by the hydraulic braking and support braking systems. When the unit stops, the regenerative braking systems will save the electric power for each unit, also when units slide down, the dynamic generator system also can save the energy (electric power) for the system. When the last unit gets to the bottom of the building, it will be moved into the center of the building by the hydraulic skidding systems and moved up to the top by the crane system. The central computer control program will be set up for every unit to move to the correct position by the infrared sensor system. Before the units move, the utility reconnection system will slide back and close in the center. After each unit moves to the next location, the system will reconnect to the unit. Each unit also has an individual utility system that can support the units when they move.
The materials used in construction for this building are: aluminum, steel, smart glass and solar panels. Materials considered for the units of the building should be light, strong and soft, which includes carbon fiber, bendable concrete and artificial bone. The units will be built by 3D printing in the factory and send to the building.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Building's height will be roughly 308 feet (Floor 10'X24 + Roof top floors 20'+ Spacing 2'X24 = 216) that includes 27 floors of 71 units, roof top spaces. Each units will be 110 tons and the size will be 1658 square feet.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research Objective: The location of choice for more and more people is the city, there is no long distance commuting, it is convenient and there is a diversity of activities. In the future, buildings will become higher and higher. People who live on the lower floors of the buildings have their view blocked. If there is a new system designed for a building that will allow the units to move, enabling each unit to have different views of the city at different times, then all people who live in the city will have a chance to enjoy the high quality of living spaces and share the equal view of their city and landscape.
- Research Backgrounds: Living trends have changed in the US. More and more people have started to move into the cities from the suburbs; most of them include the millennial generation and the baby boomer generation, because of job opportunities, commuting, convenience and a diversity of activities and services. The World Health Organization (2013) predicts roughly 70 percent of the world's population will live in the cities by the year 2050.
- Effect of the Research in Real-Life: Because of the urbanization trend, the buildings became higher and higher in the city, and the higher floors of the buildings have a better view than the lower floors. In the market, different floors have different selling or renting prices. Now, they pay more money for buying their unit than people on the lower floors. For example, in Taipei city, there is a 48 stories building, the higher units sell for 60 percent more than the lower floor’s units. In the United States, the floor multiplier of high rise apartments uses 1 percent to 1.5 percent multiplier per floor.
User Research: The primary users focus on Millennial Generation who are from
45~53 years old (In the future, 2035). This generation grew up in the internationalized world. These generations of people are communicating with people from different countries and travel all over the world. This generation has the personality that likes to challenge new lifestyles and can't stay in one location too long.
CHALLENGE: This is the most challenging project I have ever done. I had an idea to design a system that could improve the lifestyle of humans in an urban environment in the future. It’s a challenge for me to think conceptualizes but I also need to think about reality. The project followed the industrial design process to develop concepts based on the industrial designer’s point of view combined with architecture. Because of the unique concept, I needed to cooperate and consult with different experts from different industries. In the first step of design, I brought my first draft of concepts to interview and test with the experts who included architects, engineers, interior designers and contractors. After my first round of testing, I got even more challenged to create this design. I analyzed all the results from the experts and narrowed them down to four key solution points that can make the concepts work.
Which include:
1) Mechanical System: How to move the units with? What kind of technologies that can be used?
2) User Accessibility: How can residents enter their unit in the building?
3) Utility System: When the units move, how can they connect to the utility system which includes gas, water and power?
4) Emergency System: When an emergency occurs, how can you stop the moving system?
After that, I started to research today’s existing technologies and materials and those that may be applied in the future could help me to improve my concepts. Each technology and material that I use in my design are going through many rounds of testing with the experts. The last part of my design is to think about what kinds of experiences that I want to bring to people in the future. For this part I needed to use my imagination to think about what the world will be like in 2035, based upon my research. I separated these into two parts of experiences.
Which include:
1) Macro Experiences: - Provide new experiences when people see this building in the city. - Provide public spaces allowing residents to have different experiences in this building.
2) Micro Experiences: - Provide new experiences in the residents’ living spaces - Provide new interaction between people with the environment in this building.
