| DESIGN NAME: Relio PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ultra-high CRI Usb Lamp INSPIRATION: Relio is born as the dream of three 25yr-old Italian guys of creating a light users would fall in love with. Artificial lamps nowadays emit bad quality light, leading to poor, unnatural color rendition. The idea is simple: light is an instrument used to do things, professionally or in spare time. Relio emits a Sun-like light spectrum, and colors will be perceived the way they are. In the long run, you'll be able to do things more proficiently and with more satisfaction. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Relio is the smallest, most powerful and most rugged USB light, and the only one in the world to emit light with ultra-high color rendering (CRI). At 35mm, it's the smallest, most portable package we were able to conceive: powered by ubiquitous USB, pocketable, rugged, with a tripod socket to be mounted everywhere, and with custom TIR optics to provide a near-perfect, artefacts-free beam. It's machined in Italy from a solid aluminium block, hand-sanded and hand-assembled with maniacal precision. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Relio is powered by ubiquitous USB: a standard socket is all it takes to power it on. It is really bright! For mobile-usage needs, it can also be powered by a USB battery pack (the ones used to charge smartphones on-the-go). Relio can be mounted on standard UNC 1/4-20 camera tripods, because it has a standard socket on its bottom. We believe that users have the right to choose their preferred accessories, and find them perfectly compatible. That's what we call a "user-friendly& PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Idea is born on December 2013, and took a lot of personal efforts to be turned into a production-ready item. We completed CE and FCC certifications, patented our idea, our design and our trademark, self-made our beautiful website and self-managed our media advertising. It was a success! PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Relio is CNC machined from a single block of aluminium. Every piece is hand-sanded, polished, then anodised. To achieve perfect evenness, items have to be tilted to a specific angle to avoid acid stains. Then, each Relio is hand-positioned onto a vice to polish chamferings. Relio uses no glue, seals, o-rings: this peculiarity makes it durable, easy to assemble and to fix. The front screws resemble rivets: no one loves screws in the front! ..but our screws are a very distinctive part of Relio appearance. We tested a lot of light sources, it was really hard to find the right one. The optics have been a critical component: we wanted a perfect beam shape. At the end, we made our own TIR lenses. Such a challenge! Power efficiency has been hard to achieve: we custom-developed the internal electronics to reduce wasted heat to minimum. The result: 3W power consumption, 200 lumens of light in 92-96CRI. Best-in-class! CHALLENGE: Relio design had to be emphatic, elegant, unobtrusive, distinctive. We took a cube, slightly rounded it and matched all possible proportions between components: screws, lens, chamferings, all shapes are proportional to each other. The result is a very organic, solid-looking item. NAME: Relio PROFILE: Relio is born as the first project developed by three young friends to test their skills in making innovative hardware products. They managed all the aspects of it, from the design, logo, 3D-modeling, chain production and QA, marketing, website crafting, PR, brand registration and sales network. It took a lot of personal efforts and sleep deprivation to bootstrap it, and Relio is now having great success among enthusiasts and professionals in the photography business. |
