DESIGN NAME: Saigon Socialite
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Heritage Art Shoes
INSPIRATION: Design is a process in problem solving and Fashion4Freedom (F4F) strives to solve social challenges with thoughtful design. Our socially responsible supply chain is designed for all who seek to produce with ethical confidence.
Culture and artisanal methodologies struggling to stay relevant catalyze the concept and process of creation of our work. Instilling longevity within design allows for the stewards of Vietnamese heritage to continue representing a times past.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: If we dissolve and there is nothing left of our culture, what are we?
F4F designs with a vision to revitalize delicate global cottage industries that perch on a line between extinction and modernity. The Saigon Socialite collection signifies a reincarnation of craft and the revitalization of a future for the wood artisans of central Vietnam. The 7th century artistry that defined Imperial palaces and Pagodas for their ornate, elegant and powerful wooden structures has been translated into a modern statement of art and fashion.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: We worked with engineers to design fit for comfort, cultural enthusiasts are stepping in 700 years of history, with 1-2 new wooden motifs released each year.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design was conceptualized upon assessing the pagoda carving village for a capital loan from our NGO partner, Design Capital Asia (DCA), in 2012. Bringing concept to reality required over 33 months of investment in skill development programs across three villages.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design was conceptualized in steeping upon on a 6-foot wooden carved dragon buttress commissioned for a Pagoda. Craftspeople ensure designs adhere to cultural nuance. For example, a four-tailed dragon reserved for ranking pagodas was deemed impudent, so a three-tailed one common to door-frames was substituted. Over the first 12-14 days, the wood is blocked, baked and carved. Cobblers formed the leather over two days, applied rubber to the base, and the shoes are returned to the carvers who wax out the wood grain and varnish the wedge in local oils.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Shoes are available in two heights: Low (80mm) or High (150mm);
Wood Base Length: 220.5mm;
Wood Base Front Height: 60mm;
Wood Base Heel Height: 120 mm;
Shoe Front Height: 90 mm;

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: How to build an alternative supply chain for responsible production and cultural preservation in Vietnam?
Solution: Invest in rural entrepreneurs for socio-economic development and preservation of disappearing heritage art forms through Design Capital Asia (DCA). Next, accelerate high-potential entrepreneurs to product development, design and marketing to bring products and skills to international market through Fashion4Freedom (F4F).
CHALLENGE: The first creative challenge was to translate a 6 foot piece of art designed for a place of worship to a 6 inch heel. Ensuring strong communication between a pagoda wood carver and leather cobbler, two entrepreneurs who would have previously never crossed paths, required our team to balance contrasting personalities, working styles and definitions of ‘deadline’. Managing development and customer demand during monsoon season when production stops and priorities shift to ensure community and business has roof over their head (last year, monsoon ripped off roof of cobblers workshop).
