| DESIGN NAME: Calyx 48 PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lamp INSPIRATION: The final design of the lamp shows itself once the assembly is done : its shape of corolla (such the calyx of a tulip), the disk, the various blades (sepals) and the bulb (pistil) which compose it are directly inspired by the botanical Universe and by the vegetable Kingdom, where from the name of the object with a Latin origin: ' Calyx '. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Radiant object, the wooden lamp Calyx 48 by Osmose le bois, directly inspired by the botanical universe and by the plant world, diffuses light creating different atmospheres depending on the way it is staged: alone or in accumulation, on the floor or as table lamp... Its sepals compose a corolla, like a tulip. The openwork blades interlock without screws or glue; proposed with colored textile cable and dimmer. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As Calyx 48 is a flat-pack, ready-to-assemble lamp, the final user interacts immediately with the object : once hand-built, he can stage it as he wish thanks to the dimmer and according to the place he chooses: on the floor, on a table… PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in July 2014 in our workshop, Paris region, and finished in November. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The parts of the lamp, in laminated birch plywood, interlock without screw or glue. A clip on each blade plays on the flexibility of the wood and the principle of the razor blade was applied so allowing the clip to fit into the disk. Good preservation ensured by a hook at the end of the clip which fits the recess provided in the disk. The interlocking of 18 copies of blades around the disk ensures a free-standing set. Use of a CNC equipment allows an optimized, reproductible and fast manufacturing. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Diam. 30 mm x Height 44.8 mm Laminated birch plywood, colored textile cable, transparent dimmer Flatpack, custom-made packaging (foam) TAGS: Lamp, lighting, wooden lamp, floor lamp, table lamp, flatpack, interlocking, phytomorph, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Specifications : an original lamp which allows a mixed and variable concealed lighting that breathes a warm and radiant atmosphere. The concept also had to answer the following technical constraint: (dis)assembly without screw or glue. We also designed this lamp so that the packaging and the shipping are optimized and facilitated by a flat packaging. Solutions: this concept consists of a structure of 2 elements: 1 notched disk and 1 blade, in 18 copies, strictly identical, they perfectly interlock. CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this design activity was to find a solution to imagine the clip which ensures a good preservation between the blades and the disk, and to find the appropriate shape and cut for the blades to create the best lighting effect.
