DESIGN NAME: Totem3D a high definition 3d printer
PRIMARY FUNCTION: 3d Printer
INSPIRATION: The external dimension and shape of the 3d printer is similar to Indian totems and Moai of Easter Island. For the Indians the totems are an emblem or revered symbol and likewise the Totem3d printer can become a emblem for dental and jewelry sector because will revolutionize the system of work.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Totem 3d is a high resolution Full Hd printer featuring quality proven Dlp technology. Completely user friendly and customizable, designed for producing high quality digital orthodontics appliances, like studio models, steps for virtual setups, bites and surgical guides and much more, can also be used for restoration purposes. The high printing accuracy allows dental model manufacturing with no signs of stair stepping. It is a low cost desktop system with no hidden maintenance fees.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: 3d printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a method for fabricating a physical object from a digital model. Whereas traditional subtractive manufacturing cuts material away from a solid piece of material (i.e. wood carving or metal machining) to create an object, 3d printing adds layer upon layer of material to gradually build an object. For a simple visualization, imagine placing successive circular sheets of paper on top of one another until the stack becomes a three dimensional cylinder.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2012 in Pordenone (Italy) and finished in August 2014, this printer is the third prototype built and now I study for a new version with several improvements.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: When I discovered the world of 3D printing (3 years ago) I wanted to challenge myself and try to build myself a new 3d printer but with better quality than those on the market. So while I was working in my workshop of day, evening and night I studying and I designed the printer until I managed to have a working prototype. The printer was born as my personal challenge, only after I realized it could be very useful in the dental and jewelry industry.
CHALLENGE: major obstacles during the development of this printer are learn electronics, learn programming language because I have a mechanical industry and for me elettronics and programming language are unknown until i started this project.
