| DESIGN NAME: REGNUM CARYA HOTEL LOBBY PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lobby INSPIRATION: The location of the hotel Antalya a city on the Mediterranean coast of southwestern Turkey is the first inspirational part of the design process. It is located in between the blue Mediterranean sea and very green golf club space. So, the nature, natural forms and surfaces, pattern and textures are the main element of concept design. In addition to this, the meaning of carya is the second element of conceptual approach to the project. The mythological mean of carya refers to Carya Illinoinensis, the name of a walnut. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The leaf form of Carya Illinoinensis (walnut) is used on 3 dimensional objects and the texture and pattern of the leaf is used on 2 dimensional surfaces of the space. The steel separator located in the entrance of the lobby which separates the corridor and 25 mt height atrium has leaf patterns on the surface. It is possible to see the same pattern on huge leah sculptures and the textured surface behind the reception desk. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Green areas in indoor recreational spaces create a transition between interior and exterior spaces. Interior design was conceived as being natural, transparent and flow. The steel surface which separates the atrium and the corridor turns in to lighting element on the ceiling and the shape is water drop. It seems the water drops from the ceiling to the leaves (sculpture) near the reception desk. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design of interior hotel started in June 2012 in Istanbul and finished April 2013. The lobby design was a part of this process. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We followed the concept of nature while choosing the materials, so we used natural forms. Conceptual approach lead us to use wood and natural stone with their natural shape and forms. Leed certificated materials are used in the context of respect to nature and green. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The area is totally 1800 square meter and the height is 25 meters in the atrium. The bar of lobby is 200 square meter and the height is 4 meters. TAGS: hotel, lobby, carya, regnum RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research was mostly about local regulations. The separator assumes semicircular shape that separates the circulation of people in the atrium and in the corridor. We analyzed the circulation directions of indoor recreational spaces for designing lobby. The lighting element which is in the centre area of the lobby gives big attention. We made research to create varied lighting patterns in the centre of the lobby to emphasize the entrance. CHALLENGE: We had 2 main challanges: according to the plan, the reception was on the right sight. It was also located in between of two 25 meters atrium walls. It was not easy to emphasize the location of reception desk at first glance. The second challenge was about the tall atrium walls. When you stand under the walls, you do not feel quite well because of the scale. We tried to solve the human-scaled problems.
