DESIGN NAME: Selezione Italiana
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Food
INSPIRATION: This packaging is the result of the Barilla philosophy “Good for You, Good for the Planet: only one way of doing business”. Creating “Selezione italiana”, Academia Barilla (the Barilla brand that promotes Italian cuisine around the world) demonstrates that the best gastronomic Italian quality products (a bottle of top quality extra virgin olive oil, a jar of pesto sauce and a traditional pack of pasta extruded through bronze dies) can go hand in hand with environmental sustainability.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: “Selezione italiana” is the first packaging completely made of Cartacrusca Favini, the paper produced exclusively for Barilla by Favini using 20 percent of bran, which gives a pleasant perception of naturalness and premiumness. Cartacrusca is the first paper to be made from bran residues that can no longer be used for human consumption.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The better result is that Selezione Italiana is realized with a special paper that comes from the bran residues. Thanks to Cartacrusca, Favini has replaced 20% of virgin tree pulp with bran. Cartacrusca in addition permits very good printing result.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Summer 2014 when the packaging was developed, in October 2014 the first limited production and during first months of 2015 the packaging will be launched in mass market.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Selezione Italiana is printed offset and has been designed and developed by the packaging specialist Draeger GPP. The paper used, Cartacrusca, contains 20 percent of bran to replace virgin tree pulp. The paper Cartacrusca is fsc certified and gmo free. By using bran residues and 100 percent green energy, the carbon footprint is reduced by 20 percent.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design research started from finding the best bran residue to make it compatible with paper fiber and then creating a paper sufficiently strong for packaging purpose (Cartacrusca was available only in 120 gsm and 250 gsm). The research tools used are lab samples and the participants were Barilla and Favini Research & Development.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part was to substitute 20 percent of fibers from tree with bran creating a sustainable paper to be used for packaging purpose. With Selezione Italiana and Cartacrusca, Favini has taken a sort of packaging from nature, i.e. the bran that protects the grain, to make a one-of-a-kind paper to protect that same product in another form, pasta, thereby bringing bran and grain together again in an ideal union.
