DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Green Hunger

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Inclusive Recycling Bins

INSPIRATION:
In many densely populated cities, recycling bins are often damaged or covered with dirt. The parts of the many existing bins are not easily replaced and repaired. Their aesthetic value is low that the bins are often neglected or ignored on streets. It is necessary to design durable and attractive products to raise the awareness of environmental sustainability. Green Hunger’s image of baby birds, i.e. the posture of waiting to be fed, urges an immediate participation in recycling

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Green Hunger is a set of recycling bins which aims to promote environmental sustainability through the image of baby birds. Its form illustrates the hungry, eagerness and urgency of an eco-friendly environment. The easy-recognised image shows the important of immediate awareness, attention and action on recycling participation. It overcomes the cultural and social differences that people with different backgrounds and abilities/disabilities can appreciate the design and meaning behind.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
People can easily recognise the bins and throw recyclables into different types of bins. For VI, their mobile phones will receive signals from the interactive device of the bins telling them the location and the type of the bins when they approach the bins. VI can throw recyclables without touching the bins. For cleaners, they can clear the recyclables by unhooking plastic bags from the bins after picking up the bin cover and clean the surface of the bins and the covers easily.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2014 and finished in August 2014 in Hong Kong.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
A smart interactive device is installed inside the bins to help the visually impaired (VI) identify the bins using their mobile phones. Solar battery is used and this saves extra efforts to change batteries. The materials selected, i.e. recycling stainless metal sheet (body) and silicon or PVC (the openings), are recyclable and durable. The simple form and surface texture assures an easier maintenance and cleaning. A newly invented hooking system is installed to hold the plastic bag easily.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Intensive observations and interviews were conducted to understand how people interact with the existing recycling bins and perceive the image of baby birds. It is found that people tend not to use the bins because the bins were unattractive, dirty and damaged. The participants, especially children, loved the idea of baby birds as if they were feeding them. It can be concluded that Green Hunger makes recycling become a pleasurable daily practice for everyone, including the young and disabled.

CHALLENGE:
One of the challenging tasks during the development of the project is to design an attractive but durable product. The form and the structure were designed thoughtfully, and the materials were chosen carefully. Incorporating the design ideas and technical features is an important issue to be resolved in this project. The design of Green Hunger is the creative solution through lengthy and serious negotiations among different aesthetical and technical concerns.
