INSPIRATION:
The design seeks to create a dialogue between the individual and the nature, using diamond as a symbol for precision and permanence. Beyond the mainstream, the shades are constructed with geometric precision strictly using converging lines, creating symmetry and optimizing the relationship between angles and edges. The work relies on the interplay between architecturally-inspired drafting process and fashion object that explores the concept in the point of shape, construction and manufacturing.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The shades are the result of the interdisciplinary design collaboration and Austrian craftsmanship. 13&9, a brand founded by architect Martin Lesjak and fashion designer Anastasia Su with occupation in architecturally-inspired product and fashion design has co-designed with Martin Lasnik, eyewear designer, a conceptual eyewear. Together with Robert La Roche, an eyewear company connected to the design industry since 1973, 13&9 releases limited eyewear collection that distinct contours and facets

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The Geometric Collection Diamond Shades are eyewear that is designed to create a unique look on the wearer’s face through a contemporary design concept that employs complex manufacturing to process the eyewear. The shades are both an architectural object and fashionable accessory in overall concept with its lenses, frame form and surfaces. The collection offers a dialog between architecturally-inspired concept in the point of the construction and manufacturing process of the frame.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The eyewear development began in January 2014 by the design team at 13&9 and Martin Lasnik in Graz, Austria. The samples are shown in New York City at the 13&9 exhibition at WantedDesign in May of 2014 during NY’s design week. In January of 2015 a partnership with Robert La Roche was formed to release this collection and to collaborate in the design of the future editions. Shades we debuted at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in NYC at the Angel Sanchez show in February 2015 and on market in March 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The eyewear is designed with CAD programs and then produced using modern CNC technology and handcraftsmanship. The cellulose acetate frames are first cut with a CNC machine and then undergo rough milling to create the contours and facets, followed by rough grinding to further define the frame. The final step, following sandblasting or grinding by hand, is carefully hand polishing the frames. Custom made flat lenses are polished and implemented in the frame with fiber by hand.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The work relies on the interplay between geometric forms and wearable fashion object with aim to create conceptual eyewear behind the mainstream. The eyewear is drafted in CAD programs using converging lines to create exact symmetry between angles and edges on the face. The methods such as cutting with a CNC machine, rough milling, than grinding to define contours and facets and sandblasting or grinding by hand are used to create innovative frame effects. The result seeks an attributes of the diamond symbolizing conceptual design and complex processing.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to construct at the same time a unique and wearable fashion object using geometrical forms and exact symmetry between angels and edges in the design of the frame. 13&9’s architectural background influenced drafting process using programs that are usually used to construct the buildings. Co-design with Martin Lasnik, having experience as an optician enabled processing of the product that refers to eyewear standards. The manufacturing process regarding the outcome of the overall concept of Diamond Shades was developed gradual for this collection.

PROFILE:
“Geometric Collection” is the explosive result of a gathering of creative minds – all with their individual history, background and approach to design. On one side Robert La Roche, an established long-running eyewear brand with close ties to the art industry since its start in 1973. On the other side 13&9, an internationally awarded design collective with its core in the field of fashion and product design, consisting of Martin Lesjak and Anastasia Su as well as Martin Lasnik, optician and eyewear designer. The opening release is called “Diamond Shades”. Founded in January 2013, 13&9 is an interdisciplinary design collective from Graz, Austria, that celebrates the unique talents and partnership between architects INNOCAD and product and fashion designer ANASTASIA SU. The interdisciplinary team’s successful cooperation with specialist partners like Martin Lasnik has led to outstanding achievements in design of furniture, fashion, accessories, lighting and art objects, as well as for industrial design and sound installation projects. From the beginning on, projects of 13&9 have been recognized with numerous awards and architectural publications. Founded in the early seventies by renowned Austrian eyewear designer Robert La Roche, the eponymous eyewear brand at once established itself on an international scale as an outstanding and truly trendsetting label during the fashion-crazed New Wave era of the eighties. Continuing its success with daring avant-garde designs throughout the nineties, in 2013 Robert La Roche partnered with eyewear aficionado Anthony Reid to subject the brand to a major and radical change where age old brand values nod to modern day aesthetics and brand positioning.
