| DESIGN NAME: Pepsi Solar Cart PRIMARY FUNCTION: Vending Cart Solar Cooler INSPIRATION: The solar powered cart was designed to empower local entrepreneurs in economically disadvantaged areas providing solar powered equipment to bring cold PepsiCo beverages and also food products to remote corners of the world where there is no reliable power grid. Moreover, many of the mobile carts offer light at night and electrical charging stations, all powered by solar energy, encouraging additional community engagement and benefit. In line with PepsiCo’s commitment to not only environmental sustainability but also human sustainability, the vending carts were designed to meet local fabrication capabilities using readily available materials and resources with a focus on: usability, safety, functionality and aesthetics. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Addressing the problems of an unreliable power grid in many parts of the world and the inaccessibility of cold beverages PepsiCo’s solution came in the form of a vending cart, using a sustainable power source, solar panels, to power the cooler and packaging it in a way that would allow transportation to urban or inaccessible areas. The delivery system developed, uses a stock tricycle design, an extremely minimal steel frame design which can be fabricated locally. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: - PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Currently in a testing phase in Faisalabad and Islamabad Pakistan. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: - SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: - TAGS: solar, cart, tricycled, power, PepsiCo RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Currently in a testing phase in Faisalabad and Islamabad Pakistan, the carts allow vendors to run their business off the grid without need for reliable electricity or infrastructure. Our learnings from the testing phase are being assessed and applied to improving the functionality of the carts for an official multi-market global rollout. CHALLENGE: In line with PepsiCo’s commitment to not only environmental sustainability but also human sustainability, the vending carts were designed to meet local fabrication capabilities using readily available materials and resources with a focus on: usability, safety, functionality and aesthetics.
