DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Public seat

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
L-shape concrete seat

INSPIRATION:
As we all known, the concrete public seat is huge and heavy, which makes it difficult to be transported and formed. We were trying to solve this problem by disassembling. We disassemble the heavy concrete public seat into many L-shape structures. And the L-shape structure allows itself to be modified and reformed to produce various types of combination, which will not give us a feeling that it is stiff, although the public seat is made by concrete.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
UNIQUE PROPERTIES: the L-shape concrete public seat forms by flipping a single "L". Also, the proper connection of both sides is full of sense of rhythm. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: By positioning equal-distance (180mm) holes on the structure, it can be joined as a whole by using long screw bolts. The L-shape structure allows itself to be modified and reformed to produce various types of combination, which adapts different size of fields and satisfies multiple demands of usage.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Due to the 60mm difference of its two sides, the structure is well-proportioned. Also, the proper connection of both sides is full of sense of rhythm. The L-shape structure allows itself to be modified and reformed to produce various types of combination, which adapts different size of fields and satisfies multiple demands of usage. Finally, based on the series of modification and reformation, it becomes much easier to lean close to and integrate into the modern styles of construction.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in Spring 2014 in SWJTU and finished in July 2014 in Chengdu. The L-shape concrete public seat now is in southwest jiaotong university.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Made of concrete, steel, wood, PVC tube. Every single L-shape structure is made by wooden molding and concrete placement. And by positioning equal-distance (180mm) holes on the structure, they can be joined as a public seat by using long screw bolts.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Every single "L" Long side: 44cm. Short side: 38cm. Width: 10cm. Height: 5cm. Weight: Every single "L" is 8kg.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We create the L-shape structure, so we manage to disassemble the whole heavy concrete public seat into many L-shape structures. The L-shape structures are easy to be transported and formed. The concrete material combines with nature and the pursuit for appealing design brings the product a lot of happiness. The L-shape structure allows itself to be modified and reformed to produce various types of combination, which adapts different size of fields and satisfies multiple demands of usage.

CHALLENGE:
The L-shape structure is the thinner the better. We tried hard to reduce its thickness from 10cm to 7cm first, and then from 7cm to 5cm, which took a lot of time and effort. Moreover, the size and amount of reserved holes have a significant impact on the forming and turning model of the L-shape structure. We made the turning model success by putting PVC tubes into the holes in the formwork, which ensure that the formwork can be easily removed.
