DESIGN NAME: Cycles
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ring
INSPIRATION: This ring is inspired by the Touareg amulets called Khomissar used in Western Africa. Women wear these talismans around their neck as a symbol of protection or to promote fertility. Traditionally it is handed down from mother to daughter.
The design is an interpretation of these tribal talismans, expressed in a contemporary form.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The concept brings together the idea of constant transformation and change. Traditions passing down through generations, represented through infinite cycles and motion.
This silver ring is fully square and dynamic. Five square plates are movable; therefor the ring can be shaped according to the geometry the wearer would like to see on her hand.
The ring part symbolizes the palm, and the movable plates, the fingers.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The plates are connected to each other with a hidden screw from the center of the ring, connecting them, but also allowing them to easily turn without scratching each other. The ring can be worn with all plates fully open, partially or fully closed. Each position therefor becomes a new design, a new expression, a new ring.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: December 2013 – June 2014 İstanbul Turkey

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research is a culmination of personal trips taken to West Africa, tribal artifacts collected and nomadic cultures studied for many years.
CHALLENGE: The challenge of the design was to stabilize the screw and place it in a way all plates move with a reasonable force applied from the sides, not too tight and not too loose, in a balanced way.
