DESIGN NAME: Woven Sculpture
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Menswear
INSPIRATION: I looked into Japanese traditional architectures and found its aesthetic of joinery. It's an amazing craft that carving woodblocks into particular shapes then join them together to build strong construction. Also being influenced by Zen, a mathematical principle created for calculation of buildings which addresses its idea- keeping balance in a composition via irregularity and asymmetry. I considered fabric panels as woodblocks and believed garments can be made by the same philosophy.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Woven sculpture is a whole hand-made and artistic menswear as well as an innovative methodology applying to clothes. Basing on the principle of Japanese joinery and Zen, open-stitch hessian chosen as the main and the only material to be deconstructed then re-constructed the garments by hand stitching. Also woven sculpture is composed by only rectangular and irregular-polygon pattern pieces, using non-curve pattern panels to build the garments that can be worn on the body. An illusion of seamless created as well as the three-dimensional silhouette make it visually like a wearable sculpture.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The outfit has 1 jacket, 1 trousers and 1 shirt. Although the outfit was designed as a suit, each garment works well with other items. Consumers can wear either the jacket or the trousers with their own clothes from their wardrobe.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2014 in London and one outfit was completed in February 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The rule of Japanese joinery is joining wood-blocks with no other materials, taking the idea that wood blocks are carved into different figures for joining, fabric was deconstructed into yarns and using yarns to replace threads to stitch on the other panel. Also there are plenty types of joinery, none of them is cut into round shape therefore each angle of patterns is either 90 degrees or 45 degrees.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The methodology is to interpret ideas of Japanese joinery and Zen into fashion pattern cutting in a mathematical and geometrical way. In terms of the objectives, first, look into the construction of joinery and understand the feature and figure. Second, know the connection between Japanese joinery with Zen and find coherent materials. Third, use the research found to build set a particular principle applying to design and pattern cutting, and fourth, create silhouettes by toiling and draping.
CHALLENGE: Due to the method of fully hand-stitching, which is very time-consuming, I had spent almost two months to complete the two garments. But I have discovered a new way to deal with the problem that can be used in production process in future.
