DESIGN NAME: SH 12
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wall Clock
INSPIRATION: Weena was inspired by the method between object and shadow. Shadow exists as there is an object. An object can be seen or felt as shadow exists. During the process, she also discovered the phenomenon of coloured shadow or reflection. It can be seen in natural light. Inspired by past knowledge of how to know time, the project presents concepts for modern home accessories and systems that can be used in a cyclic sense. Yet simple and easily to understand.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: SH12 clock is a wall clock which plays with the relation of an object and it‘s shadow of showing and hiding. It represents the subconscious of time. The clock shows hours only by the shade・shadow. “Shadow is a living thing which only follows something that is alive. “The true self of the passing hours is hidden underneath an elastic fabric. An experimental design with a combination of hard and soft material that mysteriously hides a part of itself under the visible skin. Feel the hours alive, enjoy colourful hours, day by day on wall.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The clock shows hours by shadow under the elastic fabric, which made a clear vision yet elegant. It work well like normal clock because of the distance between the pointer & fabric. The gentleness and tension of fabric is also a key for a better result. The fabric feels like a visible skin, inviting users to touch them like a living product. Users can also wash or change the fabric which extra provided. It performs the time in a soft & peaceful way, which brings your day in a relaxing pace.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: "The Praise of Shadow" was supervised by Prof. Barbara Schmidt at Kunsthochschule Berlin weissensee in Winter semester 2014. The project was participated by 5 students and exhibited in DMY Berlin 2014.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To realise a product from her idea, she had chosen materials which could presents the clock looks elegant like a precious. Yet to simplified the structure. The most important part of the clock it the pointer. It is 3D printed, made to stablelize the appearance of shadow against the strong tension of fabric. As it is normal clock, there is no special mechanical movement. In order to make it functional, the measurement between the fabric is needed to be considered.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Material: Wood-frame, elastic fabric, normal clock, brass, MDF, ABS
Dimensions: W200 x H230 x D30
TAGS: Shadow clock
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Shadow is the vital downside of light. It protects, cools, has volume and depth enveloped, modulates plasticity and spatiality can be perceived, yet is hardly noticed. To present the shadow naturally in real life, the appearance between shadow & object was analysed, revealed the elegance and beauty of shadow. Inspirited by the principal of reality & unreality. Shadow as an exist of time, which sunlight dramatically changed its length. It illuminated object & create misunderstand in between.
CHALLENGE: Weena's aim is to create a various appearance and misunderstand of shadow & object. Using the phenomenon to design a functional product. Time cannot be seen. The reality control by time, the unreality appear on shadow. The challenging part is the clock movement is too weak to move against the tension of fabric. She overcame by trying out different type of fabric, changing distance & fixing the tension by wooden frame. Finally to think of fitting daily life, easy carry, changing, washing & fixing.
