DESIGN NAME: Monty Bojangles
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Confectionery Packaging
INSPIRATION: We started with the idea of the saying - curiosity killed the cat - warning of the dangers of unnecessary investigation or experimentation. We changed the this to ‘curiosity thrilled the cat’ and created a brand story where our hero’s curiosity sets him out on exciting ‘taste adventures’.
We felt Michael Palin, the quirky curious British traveller abroad was the perfect inspiration and role model for Monty, our cat character.
The world we created came from the Monty Python link and Terry Gilliam’s wonderful animated creations. We echoed his mix of hand painted crafting with found irreverent antique photographs mixed with a more vibrant modern palette to create a visual world that became as exciting as the chocolates themselves.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A tone of voice for the brand around ‘the curious adventures of Monty Bojangles’ set the quirky tones for the packaging and product names (e.g Choccy Scoffy) all of which become curiously moreish.
We not only gave Monty a starring role in the brand but connected him to the reason to believe in the chocolates difference to the competition around the simple idea of curiosity and seeking new tastes.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Each box shows a ‘new adventure in taste’, suggested by a collage of Victorian etchings, original botanical drawings and hand-painted illustrations on a fresh, vibrant colour palette. These collages make the packs unique and stand out from the competitors on-shelf.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The new packaging for the truffles range was launched September 2014.
