| DESIGN NAME: 013 - THE SCENTED CANDLE PRIMARY FUNCTION: Scented Candle INSPIRATION: The man inspiration to produce everything here in Germany. After figuring out that there is a big industry working with Weißblech in Germany, I found a company producing tins of Weißblech in Limburg. Also I wanted the packaging for the candle be part of the candle and no extra box. So the information label with the branding is the packaging at the same time. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The candle is part of the current product selection of the brand SIMON&ME. From the tin, to the wick and the opener, every piece, except the scent, is made in Germany. Even the raps wachs, is sourced in Germany. This makes the candle unique since most companies, source their materials worldwide. The custom opener makes the candle an experience for the customer. On the bottom it says the label should be removed before burning for aesthetic reasons to be inline with the companies idea of design. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The candle needs to be opened with our custom opener. Before lighting the candle, it is recommended to remove the label for aesthetic reasons and to unveil the simplistic design. After the candle burned down, the tin should be used as a pen holder, ash tray etc. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: It took us about 5 month after we first had the idea to get the first production run of 150 candles, which we produced ourself in our studio in Berlin. We started in september with contacting the first companies and had the first sample ready by the end of November. In december we finalized the receipt, and how all componets come together in Januar we did the first production run. Now by the end of the moth, we hope to have an external production to produce the candle in bigger amounts. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Packaging Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main packaging is made from a Weißblech tin made by a Germany company based in Limburg. The label was printed by an Gutenberg oldskool print company based in Berlin. The wick comes from the westdeutsche Dochfabrik, a company specialized in producing wicks in Germany. The wachs is rapswachs, sourced in Germany and the scent is deepening on the origin of the scent ex mountain pine from Tirol Austria. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: - comes in a metal tin - includes a special tin opener attached to a white leather cord - comes in three different flavours: rosemary, mountain pine and lemongrass - the tin may be used as penholder, ashtray or similar after usage - 100% raps wachs blended with natural oils TAGS: minimal, functional, made in Germany, custom opener, reusable, sustainable, recyclable RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We started by watching youtube tutorials on how to do candles at home. We then tried to find our which wachs there is. We then tried to find our which wachs would be the most environmentally friendly and the closest to our home, Germany. After that we found out which basic machines, heater, hot glue gun, etc. we would need, bought little quantities of the ingredients we wanted to use and started prototyping. For the fragrance we visited several stores in Berlin and called companies who produce natural oils. CHALLENGE: It was very difficult to find a different approach to a scented candle, than a candle in a glass, since this is the most common way. Also producing everything in Germany was a huge challenge, since there are only a few people working in the area in Germany. At the same time, we wanted to make the product as environmentally friendly as possible which made it difficult to find the right wachs.
