DESIGN NAME: Ocean
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bottle
INSPIRATION: Hawaii distillery produces vodka using deep ocean mineral water as a blending ingredient and placed it in a standard straight-wall stock bottle. The packaging did not convey the brand position or unique properties of the product. With the name of the brand and key ingredient being the ocean, ocean-only artifacts became the criterion for the design process. The glass fishing floats from the mid-1800's became the primary element. With the oceans covering 71% of our planet's surface, the neck of the bottle is angled to mimic the Earth's axis. Cerulean blue selected to convey ocean water.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A contemporary expression of a glass globe bottle fashioned after the ancient hand blown glass fishing net floats. The angle of the neck mimics the Earth's axis with a disproportionate amount of thick glass sediment placed opposite and perpendicular to balance the vessel. The small flat disk carved out of the bottom serves as its base allowing emphasis to remain on the sphere shape. The lightly tinted transparent blue color reinforces the purpose of the vessel - to hold liquid.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The bottle is used by bartenders for on premise consumption and is in retail stores for consumers to use at home. The length, diameter, and radius of the rim on the neck of the bottle was designed to be held by any size hand making it easy to pour. The custom sphere shape of the bottle lends itself to be seated in proprietary ringlet holders as well as flat shelving.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project concept and initial design started in January 2013 in Atlanta/USA with engineer modifications and prototype bottles finished in May 2014 in Sichuan/China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The initial design was created in Adobe Photoshop 2D depicting a 3 dimensional shape using special effect plug-ins. This served as the guideline for the structural packaging engineers to CAD render the design in appropriate (volume) sizes, while modifying nuances such as length/diameter of neck, radius on rim, thickness of glass deposit areas, etc. Mold injection/release, and conveyor belt aspects were critical components in negotiating the details of the final version.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The core package holds 750ML-800ML of liquid volume and is 152mm Width x 140.5mm Depth x 170.6mm Height. It is comprised of 900-945 grams of glass. The neck has an ID of 23mm and OD of 37mm. The axial tilt is 35 degrees. The flat base has a 51.6mm footprint. The bottles are released from the mold onto concave fiber pucks to orient the neck upright and again for liquid insertion.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research in identifying and locating details for the inspiration of the project was conducted on the internet using basic search criteria. Information about the competitive landscape in the alcohol industry and consumer trends and insights was obtained through qualitative research purchased through industry sources. Results revealed the spirits industry lacking in product/packaging innovation, relevance, and authenticity. Conversely, consumers responding more to premiumization and provenance as value factors.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge came from production and realization technology limitations in both equipment and individual desire to work on nonstandard project scope requiring expanded manufacturing capabilities. Complete sphere shaped glass bottles are not typically produced in mass production due to lack of vessel stability. Reworking tooling and other componentry were necessary to accommodate the desired result. In addition, the angled neck required weight balance measures making it more difficult.
