DESIGN NAME: Eclipse
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table Lamp
INSPIRATION: As its name suggests, this lamp design was inspired by nature's most amazing and unusual phenomenon eclipse which is an astronomical event that occurs when an astronomical object is temporarily obscured, either by passing into the shadow of another body or by having another body pass between it and the viewer.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Eclipse is both sculptural and functional as a lamp. The Eclipse lamp is an eye-catching spherical lampshade from a massive concrete shell. Cast in one-piece, the unique lamp offers you a minimalist and simple lamp at its best. Each lamp is distinguished by individual concrete structure and rough yet inviting aesthetic. Eclipse lamp generates a unique lighting effect with bright illumination in the dark. The table lamp sits elegantly on the concrete shell and its shape can be varied in any direction.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: A small table lamp which could express a self material feature in opposition to impersonal and cold minimalism. In spite of its radical simplicity this light fitting offers a wide range of atmospherical lightning solutions. Each of the unique shells is handcrafted in a limited edition. Why concrete? Because it is simple, very expressive, affordable, modern and changeable in its own nature.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Eclipse started in May 2014 and finished in February 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The raw concrete is carefully casted and all parts of the lamp are assembled by hand. As the inside epoxy coating is applied to each lamp individually, every single lamp is truly unique. The high quality epoxy coat inside provides pleasant and warm diffuse light. Epoxy Coat (Inside), Concrete (Body Outside), Powder Coated Aluminium (Parts)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research for the project started on the phases of an eclipse and how to give this shape to a lamp that reminds the eclipse at first sight. Than choosing the right material which should reflect the moon's surface naturally was challenging. As is well known, traditional concrete has a greyish colour, and some textures like blow holes and air bubbles on it which is totally imitates the moon's surface and convert this analytic data into a product resulted in Eclipse.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging thing for Eclipse is thinking creatively and boldly and challenging the existing lighting innovations, shapes, materials and/or functions of the leading lighting design creators and producers by designing something truly unique! That is why I chose a very uncommon material for lamp's body shell as "concrete".
