DESIGN NAME: Drum
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table Lamp
INSPIRATION: This design was inspired by the relation of two geometrical shapes, a circle and a triangle, in balance with each other. The presence of a plumbline, which is the switch, acentuates that aspect as if mesuring the weight between both elements.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Drum is a table lamp, designed to illuminating the working area of a desk without obfuscating the user. The most important property of this product is it's lampshade, which is made of several compressed sheets of ironwood with a glossy varnish finishing, created to direct the light upward and downward especially.
The lamp has a single polished steel leg, that has its base out of the center of the lampshade and is controlled via switch ticking mechanism, centered in the bottom of the lampshade.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Drum is best suited for desks and/or tables, but can also be used as a bedside lamp. It is turned on and off via ticking switch that hangs from the base of the lampshade.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: August 2014 to September 2014, PORTO/PORTUGAL
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Lighting Products and Fixtures Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The lampshade is constructed by rolling four layers of ironwood sheets together by negative pressure, so as to ensure mechanical strength and dimensional stability. Special delicacy in the finishing between the thickness of the wood and acrylic top and bottom.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Structure in stainless steel rod, sub inner structure and anchoring body electric componestes steel plate, lamp in ironwood veneer finished to a high gloss varnish, tops opal acrylic plate. Dimensions: 368 mm x 368 mm x 482 mm
Economic lamps GU10 (9W) x2

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: For this design there was a significant effort developing a proper way to create the lampshade only using sheets of wood. This was achieved by creating a mold that would compress the sheets until they were fully glued together, making the cylindrical lampshade resistant and stable.
CHALLENGE: The dificulty in this project was to correctly create the four-layered lampshade in the desired circular shape. Although it is not technologically advanced, several attempts were needed before the technique was perfected.
