| DESIGN NAME: Portable Lap Desk Installation No.1 PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multi-functional desk INSPIRATION: The inspiration came from the desire of designing a distraction free work space, by keeping the size of the desk small, the user can only keep essential items on the desk therefore help them concentrating better. Subsequently we came up with the wall-mounting solution which gives it the distinctive minimalist styling and allowed it to be removable. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The desk consists an extremely space saving wall-mounting solution, and could be stored flat against the wall. The desk is removable from the wall bracket which allows user to use the desk in different places at home. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When the desk is set up on the wall, it can be used as a normal desk. The user can easily remove the desk from the brackets and use the desk anywhere else in the home. When finished using this desk, the user can store it flat against the wall on its brackets. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in May 2014 and finished in December 2014 in Nottingham. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The desk is made with eco-friendly 3 ply solid bamboo, cut by CNC to required dimension then sanded and oiled by hand. The metal brackets are made from steel and then powder coated. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The bamboo desk itself is 56cmx35cmx2cm. The metal brackets use 26.9mm diameter mild steel tubes, the lengths are 260mm and 400mm. The packaging uses heavy duty cardboard. TAGS: Space saving, portable, eco-friendly, contemporary, minimalist, innovative RESEARCH ABSTRACT: During the research stage we looked into different styles of working on desk. This was key to establish the size of the desk, which needs to be big enough for working and small enough for it to be portable. Studies were also curried out to establish the position of the phone stand, which resulted a groove across the entire desk top so both left handed and right handed users can use it with ease. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was to design the desk to be portable as well as to be used as a traditional desk. To allow this feature, both the wall bracket and the desk have to be strong enough to take the weight.
