DESIGN NAME: Coral Extinction
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ring
INSPIRATION: Coral is currently experiencing extinction due to human activity among other factors. It is a serious global issue that every individual should be concern and be aware of because coral are important in the ecosystems as they provide habitats for thousands of species in the ocean. This has inspired Sardonna to focus on coral extinction, to deliver a message of the importance and function of coral, and to also help to reveal their beauty to the society.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Coral is found underwater where not many people have a chance to explore their beauty. Therefore, Sardonna has designed this series of three wearable rings; the concept is to bring coral’s intricate form, colors and importance to the attention of society. The design is an abstract interpretation of coral’s deterioration. There are three stages in this series; the first stage represents a healthy and prosperous well being of coral reef. The fact that paper covered with silver indicates viewers does not recognize the value of coral at first. During the second stage, the coral begins to deteriorate, showing half its skeleton and half coral polyps, which the color of coral is starting to expel. At this stage the silver reveals itself and viewers begin to notice the value. The third stage represents how extinction strips coral of its natural beauty. It shows the inside skeleton of coral without their polyps, which representing they are dead. The entire silver ring reveals and the viewers will finally acknowledge the value of coral.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The rings are to be worn on the interior of the hand to represent the coral being treasured. The weight symbolizes the value and importance of the pieces and sizes of these rings are large because it allows viewers to notice their existence.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was developed in Toronto, Canada and it took around seven months from start to finish.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The materials used to create these rings are sterling silver and Mitsumata tissue paper. The technical processes include 3D modelling (Rhinoceros), printing, casting and fabrication. The last step is to apply white glue and plug in tissue paper though the holes on the ring to create texture and colour.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Ring# 1: Width 62mm x Depth 42mm x Height 98mm
Ring# 2: Width 61mm x Depth 37mm x Height 87mm
Ring# 3: Width 51mm x Depth 31mm x Height 69mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research background of this series is mainly about the importance of coral and why they are being extinct. Furthermore, Sardonna did a significant amount of research on the different forms and structure of coral, as well as 3D modelling, printing processes and fabrication techniques.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge in the production is to create the form of the ring. The design must be produced in a way that is able to print in 3D object and cast into sterling silver.
