DESIGN NAME: Gatorade Oliva Packaging
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Packaging
INSPIRATION: From the first breath of Project Oliva, the focus was to create a package that was a leap forward. A package that was redesigned from the ground up in the most efficient manner possible; a package that was as efficient for the Athlete and efficient for the environment as efficient as it was for manufacturing. For inspiration we focused on architecture, sporting goods, and automotive influences to create a sleek, strong and aggressive shelf presence.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design of Oliva utilizes its own light weighting in the structure itself (the 500ml version coming in at 22grams, making it the lightest weight commercialized hot fill container in the world). Even in spite of its light weighting, the container is still exceptionally rigid and strong when grasped and does not collapse like most ultra-light containers do.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In order to improve user interaction the design utilizes the thin plastic walls and body structure with large oppositional hand grips that squeeze together for faster rehydration when paired with a sport cap. These grips allow the consumer to force fluid out of the container at a faster rate for quicker rehydration on the go.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project launched to the commercial marketplace in El Salvador in 2014

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The overall package, which will be exclusive to the Gatorade brand in Latin America, will weigh 22 grams (500 mL), and this new bottle is unique in how it affects the consumer, the manufacturer, and the environment. With 30% less PET, Oliva’s lightweight package makes it a cost-effective and eco-friendly option. Not only does it function as a squeezable sports bottle but it also is a sustainable means of production and recycling.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Extensive research was done to improve the functionality of the packaging from Ergonomic studies, FEA Analysis, to pallet optimization. A thorough user interaction study was conducted to streamline the containers gripability, aggressive styling, and bold statement was needed to create a highly competitive package.
CHALLENGE: In 2009 Pepsi Co. as part of its sustainability and productivity goals, started with Amcor, to design and develop the lightest weight hot fill container to date. Code named Project Oliva, the goal was to develop an extreme lightweight container that would minimize the cost differentiation between aseptic fill and hot fill.
