DESIGN NAME: The Eco Oasis
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Interior
INSPIRATION: It was then a childcare house which was dark and rundown. The space was not fully utilized and with very minimal natural lighting entering into the house. Another point that inspire us was to have a feel of Mediterranean, where the client used to stay previously. Thus the ceiling was hacked all the way to the top to expose the structure of the roof to escalate the overall ceiling height and also, brightening up the whole space with natural light with a sense of spacious and carefree visual.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A light well was purposely created in the center of the house which runs on solar panel, as it brings in most of the natural light, and helps to reduce the use of electricity. Greenery was added to further enhance to an oasis whereby they can sit-back while enjoying the sky. A living quarter and study area extended out from the existing small attic, by constructing mezzanine with the help of an iron stairway led to the second level. The space above is also connected to an open roof for outdoor barbecue.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The floor area increased from 1500 square feet to 3000 sq ft by creating a mezzanine floor. The house is now equip with Eco friendly solar energy and natural light. The space now comes with more possibility in interaction and entertainment which cannot be done by the same layout previously.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in September 2013 and took about 12 months to complete. It was handed over to the home owner in September 2014 in Singapore.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research of the different type of Eco concept in the house and careful-planned layout. The possibility of the surrounding environment whether usage of the Eco equipment can be blended carefully with the design in the house. The result of the daily collection shown that the location of the light and air flown into the house needs to be at certain direction.
CHALLENGE: The challenge of relocating the natural light and air flow into the house created the biggest issue. The reconstruction of the different required space obstructed some structure which are needed to be relocated and add re-enforce steel for the support. The old rundown roof tiles were taken into serious consideration. Any miscalculation or bringing down the cross beams will result the rooftop to collapse.
