DESIGN NAME: 108T Playhouse
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Boutique Hotel
INSPIRATION: The inspiration came from the idea of 'play' - we want guests to rediscover and reconnect with the childhood joys of carefree play, of pure fun. Engaging through play, we introduce them to the locality. This is reinforced with firstly, the use of locally sourced material - in this case, timber pallets that are a reference to Singapore being a regional port of call and trading hub; secondly, elements borrowed from retro playground and toys which characterized childhood play for many Singaporeans.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 108T Playhouse was conceived as a destination for the modern traveler, who seeks to immerse himself in the local culture and be inspired by authentic experiences. Peppered with playful design elements, the hotel offers visitors a chance to experience the Singapore way of life. The sculptural ceiling of the lobby is composed of up-cycled timber pallets sourced from the shipping industry. The mosaic pattern on the reception counter is reminiscent of neighborhood playgrounds built between the 1970s and the 1990s.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Playhouse was conceived as more of a 'guesthouse9; or 'home stay', rather than merely a place to spend the night. As such, the suites have a livability factor - it is as if a medium to long-term stay is expected. Facilities are provided so that guests can live, work and play here; there is even secure private access to the living quarters. With this arrangement, we hope to create a more meaningful and inviting experience for visitors to our country.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was conceptualized in early 2014. Design development was completed in January 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: For the construction of the sculptural ceiling, chemical- and stain-free used timber pallets are chosen. The pallets are dismantled by cutting them clean from the stringers. Individually sawn to size, they are assembled into modules that fit into the ceiling grid to form a unique entrance feature. Minimizing carbon foot-print is also a consideration, hence the use of commonly available local materials like mosaics and terrazzo.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The total floor area is 100 square meters.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research on the travel industry as well as the millennial traveler was carried out, with the aim of designing a hotel that would differentiate itself in the way it meets the needs of guests. We looked into what the aspirations of the modern traveler are: What drives them to travel? Scouring the Internet for relevant, reliable articles, we gleaned from our readings that the modern traveler is seeking to be inspired, to connect with different people and to have authentic experiences.
CHALLENGE: With the proliferation of boutique hotels, we had to ask ourselves, what could we offer that would create value for the hospitality sector? Drawing on our unique identity as Singaporeans, we want to share with visitors from all around the world the culture and environment that made us who we are, through simplicity of design, infused with the richness of local flavors and playfulness. Even so, what we can offer is merely one perspective of our multifaceted society.
