DESIGN NAME: DELIGHT Led Lighting Fixture
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Outdoor Lighting Fixture
INSPIRATION: Design language explored in Delight is the fusion of unique streaming surfaces which creates an aerodynamic form for road lighting. The form is convenient for even harsh weather conditions and strong wind load. Moreover, Delight is a modular road lighting fixture, designed and optimized to achieve best lighting distribution on the street.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Delight is a new generation modular lighting fixture designed for street lighting. The modular system makes Delight a product family which is designed and optimized to achieve best lighting distribution for different type of roads. The product family consist of three versions with the numbers of 1,2,3 LED Modules. So that, only with increasing the number of LED modules used on the fixtures, the requirements for ME, ME2 and ME3 road classes can be met. This modularity makes Delight a sustainable product. It uses 30-60% less energy with no loss of light output. It derives considerable cost savings as well as major reductions of greenhouse emissions. Components require less material to manufacture and their extended life means far less replacement. Light pollution is also greatly reduced by using appropriate number of LED modules. It reduces glare and improves safety and visual comfort on roads.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Delight is designed for flexible usage scenarios for variable needs of roads or highways which are ME, ME2 and ME3. At that point the design is optimized for getting best light beam on streets. Changing number of modules is enough to use Delight properly for different types of roads. Additionally, the modules are optically, electrically and thermally optimized to use with LEDs. According to efficiency tests during research process, we determined the cooler winglet position toward the road such as; upside down. In that way we achieved both self cleaning qualification and ingress protection for the design. The other qualifications of the design for the usage are: Aerodynamic surfaces for the wind load, surge protection, electric shock protection (to protect against electricity the system switches off itself whenever you open the cover), special lock to open lids without any tool, adjustable bracket tilt, easy installation and re-installation of LED modules.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2013 in Ankara and finished in May 2014 in Ankara, and was exhibited in DesignTurkey Exhibition in November 2014.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Delight is designed for 3 critical emphases: optical efficiency, application efficiency and environmental efficiency. Specially designed LED modules distribute light only where it is required and the modularity of the design gives opportunity to choose 35W, 70W or 105W powered illumination according to pole lengths and installation ranges.
The product is composed of: ML® LED modules, die-cast aluminum housing, adjustable pole joint, die-cast aluminum access cover, extruded aluminum body and composite front cover. Corrosion resistant, long-life and recyclable die-cast aluminum is used for the production of main modular extruded body. It can be cut to required length, so that Delight can be produced in 3 different lengths with only one mold.
ML® LED modules also enable easy maintenance of the product by a separate intervention in case of a breakdown. Furthermore, both fixture of Delight and LED module have the ingress protection with IP66. It has a corrosion resistant die-cast aluminum housing providing an optimized thermal management system. The unique form of the LED module acts as a heat sink that can resist high temperature up to 50°C and hard weather conditions.

Delight is composed of ML® LED modules. These modules are mercury-free and harmless to environment and don't leave harmful waste when they distort or break. Also, for a safe operation, the system switches off itself whenever operator opens specially designed lock without any tool.
Other qualifications of the design are: Optimized thermal management structure, available to use -25°C – 50°C; Surge protection; Self cleaning feature; Adjustable bracket tilt between +-15°; Easy installation, easy maintenance.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Researches of the project have focused on 2 main emphasis: Thermal management and efficient illumination. During researching thermal management process, the biggest concern regarding with condition was the high temperatures especially in Middle East Region. The study of thermo dynamical management has developed into several related branches, each using a different fundamental model as a theoretical or experimental basis or applying the principles to varying types of systems. In that way the details of the design should be mastered for getting best result for thermal management. Results of the researches showed that the most important aspect of the design would be providing maximum heat transfer under the unit of time. Moreover the main target was to protect the entirety and durability of the material under high temperatures (50C).
CHALLENGE: It was a big challenge to test heat transfer contingence during design process. Several Module bodies designed and redesigned and sent to heat transfer simulation tests. After these experimental workings, the optimal cooling canals were achieved with special winglet structure to provide natural heat transfer. Moreover, IP tests applied to prototypes lead us to make new revisions on the design of the main body. After each revision, a new prototype is produced and retested until the product was passed all IP tests.
