DESIGN NAME: Ginkgo
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Outdoor Light
INSPIRATION: Oddly enough, my inspiration for my Ginkgo design was madeby blossoms from a Sacred Lotus that closes and opens in the light and dark. Shortly after, I researched online and found a large gap between demand for exotic, interactive and smart backyard lighting and found very little appealing supply for this type of technology. From there, I have found the opportunity to design an ecofriendly garden lighting for upscale home owners! A growing number of customers are looking to decorate their garden with efficient and interactive lighting
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This light is composed of materials that are resistance to different environments elements. This gives it the versatility so that it can float on the water or sits as a table light. This smart material allows the light expands and closes during the day and night. The sensors control the pedal movements and direct its open palm towards the sun. This allows the light to absorb the maximum sunlight and gain kinetic energy. In addition, they all can be wirelesses synced up which allows the illumination to have master control over the lights
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Mother light is sold individually while the Ginkgo light can purchase in sets of 6 based on the density of a particular environment. Given its simple use, Ginkgo lighting can be inserted into any area while the Mother light is recommended to be place in the area that is easy to reach. After assembly, be powered by Sunlight and will illuminate their path. The users can adjust and manage the brightness by touching the pedals of the Mother light and the smaller Ginkgo lights. In addition, the pedal portion of the light can be snapped from its stem so that can easily be removed and placed anywhere needed in the garden.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2014 and finished in December 2014 in San Francisco, and was presented at Academy of Art university school of industrial design as a Competition class project.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The body is compiled from smart memory plastic/metal. Solar panels that are used are flexible sheets. Built in battery to store its kinetic energy captures from the sun.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Mother light height is 650 mm and Ginkgo light height is 350 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: My primary research started by observing the current outdoor lighting market in the U.S and how quickly it is growing at 7.8% yearly. In addition, in higher scale homes, outside lighting trend is referred to as chandelier of the garden. Shortly After I started to research and find the issues that customers were having when looking for the right solution for their garden. The second part of investigation was observation and interviews with users. From there I could gather that few users were faced with multiple issues:
1. They are hiding the light source 2. They need to pay attention to the location of the solar light 3.Electrical saving 4.Blends to garden, and invited aesthetic interaction 5. Survives in diverse place
CHALLENGE: One of the most challenging aspects was designing a unique and energy saving lighting, that naturally blends is most gardens. Since current solar path light are stationary and cannot reserve enough energy, Ginkgo had to come up with the design that can maximize the sun energy into kinetic energy for later use.
