DESIGN NAME: Doorknob
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Key Holder
INSPIRATION: The idea was inspired by the funny moment when the designers couldn't find their keys, and realized that the keys have been hanging on the doorknob the entire time. The designers thought: "what a perfect place to put the keys!"
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Doorknob is a playful wall mounted key holder that looks like an actual door knob.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Remove the liner from the mounting foam pad on the back of the knob to mount the it onto any wall surface. Hang keys by inserting one key into the key slot. The key slot is designed to fit with the key shaped keychain, as well as any generic house key. Doorknob is an intuitive home for your keys, and doubles as a hook for coats and hats.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2013 and was showcased at Fab’s First Things First exhibition in their SoHo showroom in NYC during NYCXDesign in 2014.
Refinements are ongoing

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Examining the common doorknobs and keys; finding out ways for the slot (keyway) to fit different types of home keys so the user can use the product without the designed keychain.
Examining different mounting methods; determining the most hassle free way to mount the doorknob onto the wall.
CHALLENGE: We discovered that the most commonly used key types (66, 68, and 95) are all very close in width and height. Therefore, once we accommodated the slot for the largest x, y, and z, all the keys fit in perfectly fine.
