| DESIGN NAME: Lotus PRIMARY FUNCTION: Side table INSPIRATION: It all started from a personal need, I was looking for a place where to put my laptop or my mug beside my desk and in the same time I can easy move it when I don't need anymore, then the wonderful sight of the West Lake with its thousand of lotus inspire me the shape. This is the only side table that really answer different needs and taste. Coffee cups around the world are hungry for it. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Created for relaxed, friendly moments, the Lotus Side Table is easy to plane in any type of environment. Used on its own or in couple, the form of the table is inspired by the iconic shape of the lotus plant. The carpel of the lotus flower extends up and creates a handle making the table easy to move and invites the user to “Pick me up”. A unique structure allows control of the height and the scratch resistant table surface uses eco-friendly technology to make Lotus more durable and more sensitive to its inspirational roots in nature. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: From the interaction point of view, Lotus was designed with a special adjustable system which allow the user set the top in a range of highness between 45 and 74 cm. From the ergonomic point of view, Lotus is designed with a handle that invites the user to move it around to different places and activities. Consisting of 4 elements, the Lotus is easily assembled in just a few simple steps. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2013 in Hangzhou and finished in March 2014 in Hangzhou, and was exhibited in CIFF Guangzhou in March 2014, Salone del Mobile in April 2014, Shanghai Furniture Exhibition in September 2014. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: From the structure point of view, Lotus was designed to be stable thanks a base made in metal which work as ballast. Also Lotus is lacquered with electrostatic powder coating, both structure and top, a one hundred per cent green technology which has the characteristic of being resistant to scratches. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: With 400mm x Depth 400mm x Height 740mm TAGS: coffee table, adjustable, eco-friendly, flat box, colourful, interactive, light, e-commerce, customizable RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: Originally thought made entirely of metal this product has evolved through a long consideration of the values that the end user considers important. A focus group was invited to test a early sample of Lotus, after a while the feedback was the same from all the users: "it sound too metal when I put my stuff on it and I'm worried it can hurt me in case it fall down". Then we decide to change the top in MDF, but we found problems like thickness, straightness and finishing, the electrostatic powder coating technology applied on mdf board was the answer.
